ASH Fellow Scholar Award

American Society of Hematology

Since 1985, the ASH Scholar Award has helped ease the transition between training and the establishment of an independent career in hematology research by providing partial salary or other support during that critical period. The award offers three funding opportunities for hematology researchers. Applicants are eligible to receive the award in each level one time.

  • Fellow Scholar Award

Supported Research

Applicants must submit proposals to conduct research in hematology. Proposals that fall within any of the categories discussed below are encouraged:

  • Basic Research
  • Translational Research
  • Patient-Oriented Clinical Research
  • Outcomes-Based Research

AI Based Application Success Predictor

Based on ASH funding programs and funded research trends:

🥇 1. Strong Hematologic Disease Relevance (Top Predictor)

  • Preference for:
    • Bench-to-bedside research
    • Clinical or patient-oriented studies

✔ High success:

  • Biomarkers
  • Therapeutic targets
  • Clinical trials

🥉 3. Innovation in Disease Mechanisms or Therapy

  • Funded projects often:
    • Discover new pathways

    • Patient cohorts
    • Clinical datasets
    • Translational models

❌ Lower priority:

  • Pure basic science without clinical linkage

7. Health Equity & Global Impact

  • Increasing priority:
    • Sickle cell disease
    • Global hematology disparities

✔ Projects addressing underserved populations score higher

8. Clear Study Design & Outcomes

  • Strong proposals include:
    • Defined endpoints
    • Robust methodology

🧪 Common Funded Research Areas

  • Leukemia & lymphoma
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Thrombosis & hemostasis
  • Bone marrow transplantation
  • Gene therapy & precision medicine
  • Hematologic biomarkers

⚠️ Common Reasons for Rejection

  • Weak hematology focus
  • Lack of clinical relevance
  • Insufficient preliminary data
  • Overly ambitious scope
  • Poor study design

🧠 Bottom Line (Key Predictors Ranked)

  1. Direct relevance to blood disorders
  2. Strong translational/clinical impact
  3. Innovative yet feasible research
  4. Mentorship (early-career grants)
  5. Human data integration
  6. Clear methodology and outcomes

Provides up to $100,000 over a two- to three-year period in equal quarterly payments over the award term.

  • Applicants must be in mentored, postdoctoral training positions to be eligible to apply for a Scholar Award. While most applicants may hold the title of fellow, holding that title is not required. Applicants with titles including, but not limited to, instructor, research associate, or staff scientist are also eligible to apply. Two mentors are required.
  • MD/DO or MD/DO-PhD applicants must have completed residency at least 4 years but less than 6 years prior to the letter-of-intent deadline.
    • MD/DO or MD/DO-PhD who don't qualify for Scholar Fellow should apply to RTAF.
  • PhD or PharmD applicants must have completed their terminal doctoral degree less than 6 years prior to the letter-of-intent deadline.
  • Applicants who hold independent faculty level positions (Assistant Professor, or equivalent – which may be indicated by having achieved the appointment after an external search and/or if the individual has voting rights as a member of the faculty) must apply for the Junior Faculty Award, even if they are below 11 years since residency or degree. Individuals serving as an ‘acting’ faculty member may be excluded from this requirement.
