Ralph Alley, MD was a Founding Member of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons and served as STS President from 1975-1976. David Sheridan was an inventor and close friend of Dr. Alley who held more than 50 patents for innovations that have improved health care. Moved by his friend’s commitment to thoracic surgery, Mr. Sheridan created the Alley-Sheridan Fund, which has provides scholarships for early career and mid-career cardiothoracic surgeons to attend the STS Leadership Institute.
The STS Leadership Institute helps members in their first 15 years of practice to develop the skills necessary to lead teams in and out of the OR, strategize personal and professional goals, negotiate a career path, and influence change in the workplace.
As healthcare delivery grows more complex and rapidly transforms, physicians need essential leadership skills to adapt and work effectively with their teams in order to provide the best patient care. The STS Leadership Institute helps early career and mid-career surgeons who are STS members to develop and hone these skills (not available to current residents and fellows).
To apply for the Alley-Sheridan Scholarship, applicants must submit an application for the STS Leadership Institute 2026-27. Applicants for the program can request to be considered for the Alley-Sheridan scholarship during the online submission process.
The TSF Alley-Sheridan Scholarship is valued at $3,000. The Thoracic Surgery Foundation (TSF) Alley-Sheridan Scholarship will cover the $750 registration cost and provide a stipend to defray travel costs to the in-person events of the Leadership Institute.
Application Deadline: February 9, 2026

Applications to TSF awards are reviewed by expert committees with criteria that vary by mechanism, but successful submissions generally share these strengths:
✔ Clear Relevance to Cardiothoracic Surgery
For research awards, proposals must address important questions in cardiac, thoracic, or congenital surgical science or practice, and clearly describe clinical or translational relevance. thoracicsurgeryfoundation.org
Success tip: Define how the project will advance surgical care or generate data valuable to the field.
✔ Originality & Scientific Merit
The TSF Research Committee prioritizes original, well-designed research that is feasible and likely to yield valuable preliminary data. Trialect
Success tip: Emphasize novelty, hypothesis clarity, and the potential for your work to lead to subsequent funding (e.g., NIH or specialty society grants). Trialect
✔ Feasibility & Structured Design
Competitive research submissions include:
Specific aims
Detailed methodology
Realistic timeline and staffing plan
Clear definition of measurable outcomes
These elements show the committee that the project can succeed within the funding period. thoracicsurgeryfoundation.org

✔ Alignment with Award Purpose
Different TSF awards target education/training, innovation, humanitarian outreach or research. Writers should tailor applications to the specific goals and eligibility criteria of the award they seek. thoracicsurgeryfoundation.org
Success tip: Clearly tie your aims to the award’s mission (e.g., learning a novel surgical technique for a fellowship award).
✔ Impact & Career Development Potential
For early-career research awards, TSF values proposals likely to catalyze career advancement, helping recipients secure future independent funding and academic leadership – a predictor borne out by evidence that TSF awardees frequently go on to NIH or other major grants. PubMed
✔ Quality of Written Submission
Strong, clear, concise writing with solid figures, well justified budgets and thoughtful lay summaries improves reviewer accessibility and scoring. thoracicsurgeryfoundation.org
✔ Meet specific eligibility rules (e.g., early-career timeframe, board certification status). thoracicsurgeryfoundation.org
✔ Craft compelling specific aims and lay summaries for broader committee members. thoracicsurgeryfoundation.org
✔ Engage mentors early to strengthen letters of support and project feasibility planning. Trialect
✔ Highlight future funding strategy to show how TSF support is a launchpad for larger external research awards. PubMed
