The Leducq Foundation announces a call for applications typically in June of each year. The International Networks of Excellence Program award is $9,000,000 over five years. The INE program is open to investigators worldwide. Network coordinators must be from different continents. All Leducq networks should demonstrate the added value of international collaboration for their research program.
⭐ 1. Clear, High-Impact Scientific Focus
Networks should tackle major unanswered questions in cardiovascular or neurovascular biology with potential for real impact on patient outcomes (mechanistic insights, new therapeutic targets, diagnostics). Proposals must identify a compelling unifying theme rather than a loose collection of projects. Research Authority
✔ A strong overarching hypothesis or central scientific milestone
✔ Demonstrated relevance to critical disease mechanisms
🤝 2. International Multidisciplinary Team
Since the program is explicitly designed for international collaboration, successful applications demonstrate complementary expertise distributed across continents (e.g., Europe, North America, Asia). Fondation Leducq
✔ Network leadership from >1 continent
✔ Team members with deep, complementary strengths (e.g., basic science, translational, clinical)
✔ Evidence of prior collaboration or strong collaborative plan
🚀 3. Innovation & Bold Vision
Leducq funds innovative and courageous science — programs that are not merely incremental but aim to break new ground. However, proposals must balance innovation with a clear hypothesis and plausible path to progress. Research Authority
✔ Novel approaches to long-standing problems
✔ Strategies that integrate cutting-edge technologies
🔬 4. Structured, Feasible Research Plan
Networks must present a solid research strategy with clear milestones, risk mitigation, and defined deliverables over the five-year grant. Research Authority
✔ Detailed aims with measurable projected outcomes
✔ Thoughtful integration of subprojects across sites
👩🔬 5. Commitment to Training & Career Development
The Foundation emphasizes training emerging investigators within the network, not just executing experiments. Proposals that include explicit plans to mentor and develop early-career scientists often score higher. Research Authority
✔ Structured mentorship and training activities
✔ Opportunities for junior team members to gain leadership roles
📊 6. Strong Evidence of Collaborative Structures
The INE program explicitly values the added value of international collaboration. Successful applicants show how the network’s structure supports synergy — frequent meetings, data sharing plans, joint analyses, and shared governance. Fondation Leducq
✔ Formal interaction plans (annual meetings, workshops)
✔ Cross-institution governance and decision-making
💸 7. Thoughtful Budget & Resource Sharing
Given the large budget, reviewers assess whether funds are allocated to maximize scientific returns, support coordination, and ensure network sustainability beyond the grant term. Fondation Leducq
✔ Clear justification of costs
✔ Investment in shared infrastructure or training
The foundation does not support small single-lab pilot grants; its mission is on international, collaborative research at scale. Wikipedia

Recent themes in funded international networks illustrate the diversity of high-impact areas, including:

Collaborative studies on inflammation, cardiomyocyte homeostasis, and arrhythmias. Fondation Leducq
These examples highlight networks that are international in scope, clinically relevant, and structurally well integrated. Fondation Leducq
| Success Predictor | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| High-impact, mechanistic focus | Aligns with Leducq’s mission to innovate in cardiovascular/neurovascular science. Research Authority |
| International multidisciplinary team | Central requirement of INE awards. Fondation Leducq |
| Bold but feasible science plan | Balances innovation with credibility. Research Authority |
| Structured collaboration & governance | Ensures network cohesion. Fondation Leducq |
| Training & development of junior scientists | Builds future leaders. Research Authority |
| Clear milestones and integrated budget | Demonstrates feasibility and strategic use of funds. |
Participants in a Leducq Foundation International Network of Excellence Program (INEP) must have expertise in cardiovascular or neurovascular disease, or a related field, and must be affiliated with an academic research center. The two Network Coordinators must be from different continents. In the consideration of continent boundaries, conventional geographic definitions will obtain. The INEP is open to investigators worldwide, with the exception of the coordinator role, as described above. Participation in a Leducq International Network is contingent upon the commitment of the participant’s affiliated academic institution to abide by the financial and intellectual property provisions. Participants sign a customary research agreement which outlines the conditions of support, the powers of the coordinators to modify the program, and the responsibilities and accountability of network members.
International Network grants are not renewable. Members of concluding networks who wish to reapply with a team that consists of largely of the same participants, and with a theme similar to that of the existing network, are urged to present a new and original direction for research. All applications are considered on a de novo basis.
