About EFSD

EFSD offers support in all areas of diabetes research through a wide range of joint and stand-alone initiatives. Funding is available throughout the year.

In 2000, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes e.V. (EASD) increased its commitment to stimulate diabetes research in Europe by creating the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD). The Foundation is closely related to the EASD; it is governed exclusively by the Board of the EASD, which itself is under the close supervision of the General Assembly of the EASD.

EFSD operates on a strictly non-profit basis under the control of the relevant authorities for charity and taxation in order to support diabetes research.

The EASD, as an academic non-profit association, benefits from the possibilities offered by the legal status of its Foundation to advance diabetes research by various methods. Since its inception, EFSD has committed over Euro 100 million to diabetes research in Europe by various funding means. In the last five years, the Foundation has become a significant European funding agency for diabetes research, and is continually striving to enhance awareness in Europe of the severity and magnitude of this devastating disease.

Grant programmes offer funding for researchers working in Europe and associated countries, but Travel Fellowships are open to scientists worldwide. All applications are subject to peer review by a panel of leading experts.

Eligibility Requirements

The following regulations will apply:

Applications may be made by any paid-up member of EASD, currently either in a PhD programme or having received their highest degree (PhD, MD, DMD, DVM, or equivalent) no more than five (basic scientist) or seven years (clinician) before 1 January in the year the Fellowship is awarded. For clinicians holding more than one qualifying degree (e.g. MD, PhD) or with a clinical specialist degree/board certification, the time since the first degree may not exceed ten years before 1 January in the year the Fellowship is awarded. Time periods spent on maternity/paternity leave, long-term illness or other exceptional circumstances will be taken into account, if clearly described (further documentation may be requested at the discretion of EFSD). Fellows may not hold a permanent appointment.
Albert Renold Travel Fellowships cannot be used to finance part of a longer stay.
Successful applicants must travel within 9 months of receipt of the Award. If this is not possible, special permission from the EFSD Office must be sought or the fellowship will be automatically withdrawn.
The funds must be transferred into a European institution.
Awardees will be expected to provide a written report and confirmation of stay from the host institution on return to the home institution.
Awardees will not be able to receive a second Albert Renold Travel Fellowship within the next two years following their award.
