Dr. Joon W. “Simon” Shim is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Marshall University with a growing focus on the application of real-world evidence (RWE) and data-driven approaches to healthcare research. His work integrates biomedical science with healthcare data analytics to better understand disease burden, treatment outcomes, and healthcare utilization. With a research foundation in neurovascular biology of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and hydrocephalus, he is particularly interested in how pharmacoeconomic frameworks can be applied to the valuation of new neuro-technologies and biologics.
Dr. Shim leverages real-world data sources and quantitative methodologies to support comparative effectiveness research and inform clinical and policy decision-making. His expertise includes the application of pharmacoeconomic principles, such as cost-effectiveness analysis, to evaluate the value and impact of emerging therapies.
With a strong emphasis on translational and interdisciplinary research, he bridges clinical insights with RWE and economic evaluation frameworks to advance value-based, evidence-driven healthcare decisions.
Dr. Joon W. “Simon” Shim is a faculty member at Marshall University. He conducts this training program in his personal capacity and not as a representative of, or on behalf of, Marshall University. Programs will be conducted during the following periods: May–June; September–October; February–March.
• Pharmacoeconomics and cost-effectiveness analysis
• Real-world evidence (RWE) and healthcare data analytics
• Cost-effectiveness, cost-utility, and budget impact analyses
• Design and interpretation of real-world evidence studies
• Use of healthcare databases (EHR, claims, registries)
• Data cleaning, management, and analysis of real-world datasets
• Comparative effectiveness research using RWD
• Decision-analytic modeling (e.g., Markov models, decision trees)
• Applying RWE and economic evaluations to inform healthcare decisions
