Dr. Mary Wallingford is a faculty member at Tufts University’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, where she leads a research program focused on placental vascular development and maternal–fetal health. Her work integrates developmental biology, embryology, and bioengineering approaches to understand how the placenta forms and functions, particularly its vascular system. Through her lab, she investigates the molecular and morphogenetic mechanisms underlying placental blood vessel formation, remodeling, and dysfunction.
Dr. Wallingford’s research aims to address critical gaps in knowledge surrounding placental disorders such as preeclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction, conditions that significantly impact maternal and fetal outcomes. Her work also explores maternal–fetal nutrient transport, including phosphate regulation, with implications for long-term cardiovascular health. By advancing diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies, her research contributes to improving obstetric care and understanding the developmental origins of disease
