Clinical Pharmacology, Clinical investigation Center, and Cardio-oncology Departments,Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris, Paris
The main research areas of our group are:
The thematic priorities of the CIC Paris-East are, cardiology and endocrinology-diabetes-metabolism-nutrition, and two transversal themes, physiology and early pharmacology studies, in particular early phase oncology trials. CIC Paris-Est also hosts a starting cardio-oncology program, in close collaboration with Vanderbilt University Medical Cente
Note: During rotation, both English (for research projects and lab meetings) and French (interaction with patients) would be spoken so having a level B French knowledge would help (if the aim is to be exposed to patients).
What you will learn during your program here:
The Paris-East Clinical Investigation Center (CIC Paris-Est) is a 440 m² structure equipped with outpatient and inpatients clinical facilities. The CIC is entirely dedicated to protocol set-up, organization and implementation including data acquisition, phenotyping, outpatient clinic visits and collection as well as short-term processing and storage of biological data. The CIC also trains additional clinical research assistants (CRAs) recruited for a given protocol and these CRAs are usually mobile within the hospital to collect data in clinical divisions which are all located in the vicinity of the CIC. The CIC currently functions as a week-care hospital but there is no permanent personnel to allow overnight monitoring of patients. To this end interim nurses need to be recruited for each study which requires night hospitalizations. The CIC includes 4 investigational beds allowing night hospitalizations plus 2 beds for day-time investigations. All 6 beds are fully equipped to conduct complex clinical studies, including phase I trials. Patients benefit from individual monitoring redirected to a central telemetry; all appropriate equipment to guarantee safety, including hand-free telephone communication with a nearby Intensive Care Unit, are available on site. It is a fully authorized facility to perform phase I to III trials as well as non-pharmacological studies in adult patients and healthy volunteers. In addition to these 6 investigations beds the CIC has 2 consultation rooms, a blood sampling room, a nurses room, a local pharmacy, a small laboratory for handling, processing and short-term storage of biological samples, medical and non-medical offices, a meeting room, a kitchen, a waiting room for volunteers, archives and storage rooms, a room for –80°C and –20°C freezers (with secured alarms and temperature recording devices). The thematic priorities of the CIC Paris-East are, cardiology and endocrinology-diabetes-metabolism-nutrition, and two transversal themes, physiology and early pharmacology studies, in particular early phase oncology trials. CIC Paris-Est also host a starting cardio-oncology program, in close collaboration with Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
4-12 weeks curriculum
Fellows will be supported to settle down into their new environment (find appropriate accommodation, locate amenities, etc.). A desk space will be allocated. Full induction (safety, laboratory practices, personal welfare, etc.) will be provided by the University’s designated staff and by myself. I will arrange an initial meeting with the fellow to discuss the objectives of the training.
The fellow will be fully trained to all activities of the Department. They will be able to engage with me (supervisor) and other members of the group in different procedures. They will also be engaged in clinical research and write a manuscript during their stay, with a purpose of publication in international peer-reviewed journals.
The fellow will be given opportunity to partake in group meetings and other academic activities within the School and the University, including attending workshops, conferences etc. They will also be encouraged to present their work orally at a group meeting at least once before they complete their visit.
Towards the end of the training I will have a meeting with the fellow to discuss plans to publish their work (if enough data collected) or disseminate their findings in a future conference. They will also be assisted to identify existing or future opportunities, globally or within their original work environment, that the training has empowered them to be eligible and competitive for and how they can be assisted to access them and also integrate the knowledge and skills gained into their further research or professional practice roles.
All throughout the training any peculiar challenges or specific requests of a fellow will be fully considered to ensure a responsive, relevant and adequate training plan is developed for them.

Internship Experience Evaluation:
During my clinical research internship in Paris, I had the privilege
of joining the cardio-oncology program under the supervision of Dr.
Joe Elie Salem. From the very beginning, Dr. Salem took the time to
understand my expectations and tailored a focused learning plan for
the limited time I had.
I was welcomed into a multidisciplinary team that works seamlessly
across clinical and academic domains, and I was fortunate to
participate in both aspects.
Throughout the program, I was included in team meetings where ongoing
projects, methodologies, and scientific rationales were openly
discussed. Being able to observe and work with a group of researchers
and clinicians who consistently publish high-quality work in the field
was an invaluable experience for me.
I was introduced to the cardio-toxicological mechanisms associated
with immune checkpoint inhibitors and learned how high-quality data
are collected, processed, interpreted, and presented. The team also
guided me through the principles of data visualization, including
generating analytical graphics using R programming.
Additionally, I had the opportunity to observe clinical examinations
and understand how clinical insights integrate with research outcomes.
What I appreciated most was the collaborative atmosphere and the
intellectually stimulating brainstorming sessions during meetings.
These interactions significantly enhanced my critical thinking,
analytical perspective, and understanding of translational research in
cardio-oncology.
Overall, this internship provided me with exceptional scientific
exposure, mentorship, and professional growth.
I consider it a unique and formative experience in my development as a
young researcher in toxicology and clinical investigation.
I would like to give this program a full 5-star rating. It has
exceeded my expectations in every aspect, and I am sincerely grateful
for the mentorship, scientific rigor, and collaborative environment
provided throughout my training.
I'd like to say that I feel extremely fortunate to have been accepted and participated in this fellowship. If you're interested in advancing in academic field, especially clinical trials, and conducting valuable projects, you'll have a great opportunity to observe and even become involved in these projects. Here, you'll be able to closely observe all stages of projects, from their inception to their completion, and be involved in their oversight and management. The Host Mentor is one of the best, most competent, and accomplished academics in his field, and he guides you exceptionally well in participating in ongoing projects in your own field, ensuring you integrate easily into the team. You can learn a great deal from him and his team. Regardless of your field, you can be sure you'll gain a great deal from the Host Mentor and this fellowship. Despite being a family medicine specialist and a public health specialist, I can say that I've personally gained a great deal. The friendliness of the Host Mentor and team, along with their helpfulness in all aspects of medical and paramedical matters, are also a plus. It was an excellent experience that I highly recommend to everyone.
I have not had any experience with the visa application process. Since I am a specialist doctor, I have a special passport issued by Turkey to certain individuals, and therefore I can enter France without a visa for up to 1 year. Therefore, I do not have any additional suggestions on this matter.
Paris is a city where you can easily find a place to stay within your budget through Airbnb and get around the city easily through the metro network.
My only bad experience at the beginning of this fellowship process was that my luggage was stolen and I had difficulties with this issue throughout the process. However, this was a situation completely independent of this fellowship program, and also the host mentor and everyone on the team were very supportive in helping me get over the negative experience I had.
My overall rating score is 5.
I would also like to thank you very much for your help in getting me involved in this fellowship process.
Joe listened to what I wanted from the program and catered to that very specifically. I went into the program wanting to learn about Cardio oncology and how a unit should run so that I could bring that knowledge back to New Zealand and start up the process there. Joe has a very close and welcoming team that work extremely well together. He organised for me to get a lot of practical hands-on knowledge to see how a possible unit could be developed in New Zealand. I learned so much every day that I would go home and pass out from brain strain, I did outpatient clinics twice a week with colleagues and in the afternoon, we went over the patients . The detailed review of every patient is incredible. I learnt a lot about the need for very specific knowledge about oncology drugs and their effects on the heart. A lot of time teaching me during these reviews of patients.. I really enjoyed working with the team who embraced me with open arms and I hope That they gained from me too. I feel like I have been in a program where I have met people that I will likely stay in touch with . Joe is going to probably continue to be an important resource for me and my colleagues in New Zealand. I'm hopeful that this will be a start of a wonderful relationship between our units
Improvements:
I felt that I learned more than I expected and that there are no specific recommendation.
Visa Process:
luckily, I’m a European citizen so did not need a Visa and was actually
able to work clinically.. With accompanying physician.
Travel and Accommodations:
I hired a flat on Airbnb and I loved it. There are lots of eating places to eat in Paris. There’s no need to recommend anything.
Overall Rating: Please rate your experience on a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being outstanding
i give it a 5 for exceeding my expectation
I've started my fellowship this week, and it's been incredibly great and quite career-enhancing. Dr. SALEM is a wonderful mentor, so I'm very lucky. I think this fellowship will be a great asset to me. My only problem is that my luggage unfortunately got lost after my flight, but I'm trying to manage that situation. My fellowship is for four weeks, from August 18th to September 12th. Thank you again for your well wishes and I wish you all the best.
This is to inform you that I have successfully completed my Trialect fellowship at Paris between 25th July and 5th August.
Attaching my daily report for your perusal.
Placing a comment-the fellowship was a learning experience, however, it could have been more fruitful, since most of the communication was in French, which I was not well versed in.
As a recommendation, I would like to suggest that prior to the beginning of the fellowship, based on the CV and interest of the applicant, a defined timetable of the program, day/date wise should be chartered, so that the mentor and the mentee are aware of the teaching and learning.
Thanks for all the support.
