SAEMF Advanced Research Methodology Evaluation and Design (ARMED) Pilot Training Grant

The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM)

About SAEM

The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) is dedicated to the improvement of care of the acutely ill and injured patient by improving research and education. To achieve this mission, SAEM influences health policy through forums, publications, interorganizational collaboration, policy development, and consultation services for physicians, teachers, researchers, and students. SAEM represents excellence and leadership in academic emergency medicine, and its values include idealism and quality in all endeavors, nurturing and camaraderie and diversity among members, as well as creative and symbiotic interactions with other organizations.

SAEM provides administrative support to the Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine (AACEM) and to the SAEM journals, Academic Emergency Medicine (AEM) and Academic Emergency Medicine Education and Training (AEM E&T). SAEM is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization and is headquartered in Des Plaines, Illinois.

The Applicant

An applicant for the ARMED Pilot Grant must:

  • Have graduated from the SAEM Advanced Research Methodology Evaluation and Design Course.
  • Be a member of SAEM in good standing at application deadline and during the entire award period.
  • Have an advanced/doctoral or terminal educational degree (e.g., MD, DO, PhD, PharmD, DSc or equivalent).
  • Hold a university appointment (e.g., faculty, fellow, or similar) in or be actively involved (e.g., have an adjunct appointment) with a department or division of emergency medicine or pediatric emergency medicine at the start of the ARMED Pilot Grant award period. Emergency medicine residents in their final year of residency may apply for the ARMED Pilot Grant, subject to the same stipulation of holding a university appointment at the start of the ARMED Pilot Grant award period. The applicant may work as a clinician at an institution other than the host institution or the institution at which the project will be conducted.
  • Not have previously received a SAEMF ARMED Pilot Grant, SAEMF Research Training Grant, an Emergency Medicine Foundation (EMF) grant with similar purpose as the SAEMF Research Training Grant, a federally funded individual career development award (K-series or VA CDA), and institutional training grant (K12, KL2, or similar), or a comparable research training grant from another entity, prior to the start of the ARMED Pilot Grant period. Eligibility will be assessed at the time of the award decision, so applicants funded by a disqualifying source after submission of their application may become ineligible as a result of subsequent funding decisions.

Greater consideration for receipt of the award will be given to applicants who:

  • Demonstrate a sustained interest in and commitment to emergency medicine-focused research and a research career. This demonstrated commitment may include the number of years involved in research or emergency medicine-focused research; number and quality of research or emergency medicine-focused research publications and presentations; research presentations at scientific meetings; and local, regional, national and international activities focused on research or emergency medicine-focused research. Applicants will be judged and scored according to their expressed and demonstrated commitment to these areas. Applicants who provide evidence of this commitment may receive more favorable scores. Greater involvement in topic areas applicable to the research proposal (e.g., toxicology, critical care, etc) will also be considered.
  • Demonstrate evidence of involvement in SAEM activities and functions. Demonstrated involvement includes active participation in SAEM activities and functions (e.g., SAEM presentations and committee membership). Applicants will be judged and scored according to their expressed and demonstrated commitment to SAEM. Applicants who provide evidence of this commitment may receive more favorable scores.

The Applicant's Host Institution

The applicant’s host institution must:

  • Provide adequate administrative and clerical support to the applicant, including, but not limited to, office space, administrative support, and information systems.
  • Demonstrate a track record of involvement and commitment to research and research training at local, state, and national levels. In the majority and ideal circumstances, the host institution should have an accredited emergency medicine residency program.
  • Provide opportunities for the applicant to work as an emergency medicine physician. The applicant may work as an emergency medicine physician at a location other than the host institution.
  • Together with the applicant’s host department, provide at least $25,000 in matching funds to support the proposed project.
  • Must provide financial support for SAEM annual meeting attendance for the duration of the award.

  • Must be a department or division (or equivalent) of emergency medicine (may be within or outside of the United States).
  • Should be actively involved in emergency medicine or pediatric emergency medicine research and education.
  • Should have an established research program as exemplified by: (a) faculty/staff with extra- and/or intramural competitive grant funding; (b) current Institutional Review Board- (IRB, or equivalent) approved clinical, health services, or laboratory research in progress; (c) faculty/staff who have presented their research at national or international meetings; (d) faculty/staff publications in peer-reviewed research journals; (e) a formal research curriculum; and (f) dedicated funds, space, and support personnel available to ensure completion of projects in which the applicant will participate.
  • Together with the applicant’s host institution, provide at least $25,000 in matching funds to support the proposed project.

The Mentor(s)

The applicant’s mentor(s):

  • Should have experience mentoring current/former trainees who are developing/have productive careers as research scientists.
  • Should have expertise in the applicant’s proposed area of research.
  • Should have expertise in research methodology.
  • Must commit the necessary time to provide both specific and general research training to the mentee.
  • Must supervise the mentee’s research project.
  • Must provide the necessary equipment and resources to execute the mentee’s research project if these are not available from the mentee’s department/division or another source specified in the grant application.
