Liver Disease Research

Gilead Sciences

Program Overview

The Global Liver Disease program joins 3 previously separate regional programs. Three awardees will be selected in total. One award will be allocated to the US & Canada region, one to Europe / Australia and one award to the eligible Asian countries. Applicants from each of these regions will be reviewed by their respective Scientific Review Committee only.

Each awardee is funded up to $130,000 USD over two years, paid as annual installments of $65,000 USD per year directly to the scholar’s institution. Funding for the second year is contingent upon submission of a progress report and approval by the Chair of the Scientific Review Committee which oversees each regional program.

Recipients of these competitive awards under the program will be selected by a Committee comprised of leaders in the field of liver disease. The Committee will review complete applications and select research proposals based on their scientific merit, feasibility, and innovation. Announcement of Award Recipients will be made at an awards dinner hosted by the Committee and senior representatives from Gilead.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree at time of award
  • Anticipate receiving a faculty appointment (or a faculty position equivalent to an assistant professorship) within 3 years, in association with a research institution in one of the eligible countries
  • Have a strong career interest in liver disease
  • Have a research mentor with extensive experience in the field of liver disease
  • Be able to devote approximately 50% of professional time to research for the next 2 years (versus administrative, patient care, or teaching responsibilities)
  • Be able to complete the proposed research within the 2-year award period, providing evidence (manuscript, presentation, or abstracts) resulting from the research

Gilead’s Research Scholars Program is committed to building a more diverse and inclusive scientific community. Award selections are made without discrimination based on ethnicity, race, religion, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, genetic information or characteristic, gender identity and expression.
