Based on university documents and the patterns of funding success, these factors appear important for achieving grant/funding success:
| Predictor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Strong alignment to major external funder priorities | For example, VUW researchers had success with Marsden Fund grants. Evidence: in 2023–24, UoW secured many Marsden grants. |
| Research impact + relevance | VUW emphasises “research that impacts on the lives of people … regionally, nationally and globally.” |
| Institutional and commercialisation support | The presence of UniVentures, the Innovate Fund, and internal mechanisms indicates that having translation/commercialisation backing is valued. |
| Interdisciplinary or cross‐discipline engagement | VUW’s research success narrative emphasises “drawing together expertise from across the University” in multidisciplinary projects. |
| Representation of Māori / indigenous knowledge frameworks | VUW has a Māori research focus (mātauranga Māori) and supports related fellowship schemes. Research with collaboration or alignment to Māori or Pasifika perspectives appears to gain institutional support. |
| Feasibility and readiness for external funding | Researchers at VUW who secure grants often have strong technical readiness and competitive track records (as shown by external success). For example, the 2024 list of Marsden awardees at VUW included high-quality proposals with clear aims. |
| Scholarship and early-career opportunities | VUW provides doctoral scholarships which are merit-based and consider research ability and publication record. |
⚠️ Common Weaknesses / Risks
Some potential pitfalls or weaker areas that applicants at VUW (and similar institutions) should look out for:
Research proposals that lack alignment with funder priorities or institutional strengths (e.g., not clearly impactful or too narrow).
Lack of institutional or commercialisation backing if the project aims at translation.
Projects that do not engage with Māori/Pasifika research frameworks or under‐represent indigenous knowledge when appropriate (which may be less competitive in the local NZ context).
Overly ambitious scope without clear deliverables or feasibility evidence.
Failure to clearly articulate interdisciplinary benefits or broader impact beyond academia.
🧭 Strategic Tips for Applicants at VUW
Before submission, map your proposal to not only the external funder’s criteria and VUW’s research profile (impact, interdisciplinarity, translation).
Highlight institutional support: e.g., mention UniVentures, commercialisation pathways, Māori research linkage, or existing collaborations.
If your work involves Māori knowledge or indigenous perspectives, explicitly state how your research engages with those frameworks.
For translation/commercialisation-oriented work, make sure you articulate the steps (proof‐of‐concept, spin-out potential, market impact) and link to internal infrastructure.
If early career: emphasise your prior research, publications, or scholarship, and a mentoring/supervision plan.
Ensure feasibility: timeframes, deliverables, budgets must be realistic and reflect NZ context.
Seek collaboration across disciplines if possible (e.g., combining science with social sciences, engineering, policy) as VUW values cross‐discipline.
These scholarships are open to graduates of any university within or outside of New Zealand who intend to enrol full time for a Doctorate (PhD) or who have commenced their doctoral study at Victoria University of Wellington.
