UEG Research Fellowship 2027

United European Gastroenterology

1. Intention of the programme

With this programme, UEG aims to inspire both young clinical and basic scientists to pursue a career in digestive health, to close a gap in the landscape of research funding opportunities, and to increase interaction between junior researchers and prestigious European principal investigators (PIs). The programme is an excellent opportunity for young talents to take the next step in their scientific careers by carrying out a research project that cannot be developed in their home institution, building their network, and learning new research skills.

NOTE: The main purpose of this fellowship is to support the development of a basic or clinical research project and not the development of clinical skills.

2.Basic conditions
In 2027, UEG will award two fellowships worth €50,000 each. The grant will be paid to the host institutions and will support the salary, insurance and taxes of the fellow (no overhead costs to the hosting institution).
Fellowships must start by October 2027 and last for 12 months. Applications for shorter projects will not be considered. The participants should get the chance to:
• conduct research under the guidance of a PI
• participate in research meetings
• improve scientific skills (data collection and analysis, scientific writing, statistics, etc.)
• be included among the authors of the manuscript derived from the project in which they are involved.

We encourage candidates to publish at least one manuscript as the first author.
It is the applicant's responsibility to contact potential hosting PIs.
After successful completion of the fellowship, the participant will receive free registration to the subsequent UEG Week 2028 or 2029, depending on the end date of the fellowship. Participants are expected to present the findings of their projects and participate in UEG activities and sessions organised by the UEG Young Talent Group.
Insurance, accommodation, visa, travel arrangements or leave of absence fall within the responsibility of the fellows and the hosting PIs. Furthermore, UEG is not liable for the fellows’ actions, activities, health or safety.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Strong focus on digestive health research (highest predictor)

This is the most important factor.

UEG fellowships are specifically intended for researchers specializing in:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Hepatology
  • Digestive oncology
  • Pancreatic diseases
  • Endoscopy
  • Microbiome research
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Functional GI disorders
  • Digestive surgery
  • Translational digestive health research

Projects must clearly advance digestive health knowledge or patient care.

2. Strong scientific merit and innovative research proposal (very high predictor)

The UEG Research Fellowship supports development of a substantial clinical or basic science research project in a leading European research environment.

Successful applications typically demonstrate:

  • Clear scientific question
  • Novel hypothesis
  • Strong methodology
  • High-impact research potential
  • Feasible work plan
  • Relevance to unmet needs in digestive diseases

Projects that address important clinical or biological questions are particularly competitive.

3. Strong host institution and mentor/principal investigator (very high predictor)

One of the most important fellowship-specific predictors is the quality of the host environment.

Competitive applicants usually secure:

  • Internationally recognized host institutions
  • Experienced principal investigators
  • Strong publication environments
  • Access to unique technologies or patient cohorts
  • Opportunities unavailable at the home institution

UEG explicitly designs its fellowships to allow researchers to gain expertise beyond what is available locally.

4. Demonstrated research experience and publication record

UEG requires applicants to have proven research experience according to their track record.

Strong applicants often demonstrate:

  • First-author publications
  • Peer-reviewed papers
  • Scientific presentations
  • Conference abstracts
  • Previous research projects
  • Evidence of productivity relative to career stage

Past awardees frequently had strong publication records and active involvement in international studies.

5. Early-career investigator potential

The Research Fellowship is specifically targeted toward:

  • Recent PhD graduates
  • Gastroenterology trainees
  • Hepatology trainees
  • Surgical trainees
  • Early-career clinician-scientists

UEG seeks researchers who are likely to become future leaders in digestive health research.

6. International collaboration and mobility

A distinctive UEG priority is international scientific exchange.

Successful fellowship applications often demonstrate:

  • Cross-border collaboration
  • Research mobility
  • Knowledge transfer
  • International networking
  • Long-term European partnerships

Applicants are expected to conduct research at a host institution different from their home institution, often in another country.

7. Clear career-development and skills-acquisition plan

UEG fellowships are not just project grants—they are career-development awards.

Strong applications explain:

  • What new techniques will be learned
  • How the fellowship fills training gaps
  • Why the host center is uniquely suited
  • How the experience will accelerate independence

Reviewers often favor applicants who clearly articulate professional growth objectives.

8. Active engagement with the UEG community

Although not always a formal scoring criterion, successful applicants frequently demonstrate:

  • UEG membership/Associate status
  • UEG Week participation
  • Abstract submissions
  • UEG educational activities
  • Networking within European gastroenterology

For some senior awards, prior participation in UEG activities is explicitly required.

9. Potential for future independent funding

UEG fellowships are often viewed as stepping stones toward larger grants.

Projects that can generate:

  • Preliminary data
  • New methodologies
  • International collaborations
  • High-impact publications
  • Future ERC, Horizon Europe, national funding, or major foundation grants

are particularly attractive.

The grant is open to both basic and clinical researchers, and to both medical and non-medical graduates.
At the time of submission, applicants for the programme must:
• be a myUEG Associate
• be clinical or basic researchers specialised in digestive diseases according to their track record (publications, abstract presentations)
• EITHER have completed their PhD no longer than five years ago (add two years per child for main carer, max. 4 years)*
• OR be in gastroenterology/hepatology/surgery training, or have completed it within the last five years (add two years per child for main carer, max. 4 years)*

• not hold an academic permanent position
• have significant research experience (have published at least one original paper as first author in a journal being within the first quartile of the ISI rank for the relevant subject area or at least three original papers as co-author in a journal being within the first or second quartile of the ISI rank for the relevant subject area). NOTE: Conference abstracts will not be considered as original papers.
• be fluent in English
• reside in Europe, in a country bordering the Mediterranean Sea, or in a country represented by a UEG National Member Society. NOTE: Based on the fulfilment of basic criteria, at least one of the fellowships will be assigned to the top-ranked candidate from an Inclusiveness Target Country as defined for COST Actions. Final decision remains with the Research Committee.

*Main carers of children may request an extension of the five-year eligibility limit. If this applies to you, you will be asked to complete, sign and upload a declaration as a PDF as part of your application, allowing your eligibility to be assessed.
The grant will be awarded to the same recipient only once.
