The European Society for Clinical Investigation is glad to foster the participation of the young members to the meeting:
The organizers of each Symposium composing the Annual Meeting will score the submitted abstracts. The best abstracts for novelty, relevance and scientific rigor will receive a travel grant.
The travel grant consists of € 500 to cover travel and accommodation to the venue.
The young investigators receiving a travel grant must register to all the three days of the meeting and attend the sessions for the whole duration of the meeting.
From a reviewer’s perspective, successful ESCI applications tend to show:
✔ 1. Clear Clinical or Translational Relevance
Projects must go beyond basic biology and clearly address:
Patient-oriented research
Disease mechanisms with clinical implications
Diagnostic, prognostic, or therapeutic relevance
✔ 2. Strong Early-Career Trajectory
ESCI is particularly supportive of:
Young clinician-scientists
Postdocs transitioning to independence
Junior faculty building a clinical research profile
Evidence of motivation, productivity, and career focus is critical.
✔ 3. Well-Scoped, Feasible Project Design
Given limited budgets:
Aims should be focused and achievable
Methods clearly described
Outcomes defined (e.g., pilot data, proof-of-concept)
Overly ambitious proposals are commonly downgraded.
✔ 4. Integration With Clinical Environment
Applications score higher when they demonstrate:
Access to patient cohorts or clinical samples
Institutional support (e.g., hospital or university backing)
Ethical/regulatory readiness (or clear plans)
✔ 5. Dissemination Potential
Reviewers value projects likely to:
Lead to publication (often in European Journal of Clinical Investigation)
Be presented at ESCI or allied scientific meetings
Serve as a foundation for future funding
✔ Emphasise bench-to-bedside linkage explicitly
✔ Keep aims tight and realistic
✔ Highlight your role and independence clearly
✔ Demonstrate institutional and mentor support
✔ Align language with clinical investigation, not purely basic science
| Support Type | Target | Focus | Typical Support |
