DescriptionPlease click "Apply" below to proceed with your 2026 Thyroid Research Grant Application Requirements

The American Thyroid Association (ATA) is pleased to announce the availability of funds from ThyCa, Bite Me Cancer and the ATA to support new investigator-initiated research projects in the areas of thyroid function, thyroid disease, and thyroid cancer.

Topics may include, but are not limited to, Disorders of Thyroid Function, Iodine Uptake and Metabolism, Thyroid Autoimmunity, Thyroid Cancer, Thyroid Hormone Effect and Metabolism, Thyroid Hormone in Development and the Brain, Health Disparities, Health Services Research and Health Economics and Outcomes, Thyroid Imaging, Thyroid Nodules and Goiter, Thyroid and Pregnancy.

Aim: Research awards are targeted for funding of new investigators, US or international, and intended to assist in obtaining preliminary data for submission of a more substantial application (e.g. to the National Institutes of Health (NIH)).

Submission Information: Eligible investigators interested in applying should review the information below and submit a proposal by March 1, 2026 at 11:59 PM PST.

Research Grant Award: Research grants, between $25,000 - $37,500 annually, will be awarded annually for up to two year terms (up to $75,000 total). The 2nd year funding is contingent on review of a satisfactory progress report submitted by the investigators in the 4th quarter of the first year of funding. The funds can be used for direct costs associated with the proposal, including technician's salary, supplies or equipment but not for the PI or mentor's salary. AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Strong Relevance to Thyroid Biology or Disease

Proposals and applications must clearly focus on thyroid hormone action, thyroid pathology, thyroid cancer biology, diagnostics or treatment, and connect research aims to improving understanding or patient outcomes.

2. Clear, Well-Defined Aims and Feasible Study Design

Funding reviewers look for well-articulated hypotheses, rigorous methodology, and realistic milestones that make efficient use of ATA grant resources (often modest compared to NIH). Concentrating on pilot data or feasibility can position projects for larger future funding. research.umgccc.org

3. Early Career Trajectory and Impact

ATA research grants often target new investigators, fellows, and early career researchers; applications that demonstrate career development plans and potential for external funding (e.g., NIH) are particularly competitive. bahno.org.uk

4. ATA Membership & Engagement

Many funding opportunities and trainee support require ATA membership (e.g., Associate or Active), signaling community involvement and commitment. American Thyroid Association

5. Presentation and Communication Strength

For trainee grants and poster awards, the clarity and scientific merit of abstracts and posters are critical. Clear communication encourages positive reviewer assessment and enhances visibility within the field. American Thyroid Association

🛠 Practical Tips for Applicants

Join ATA early (Associate or Active) — membership unlocks eligibility for research and trainee grants. American Thyroid Association
Engage mentors in thyroid research — strong letters and institutional backing support feasibility arguments.
Link to clinical impact — even basic science proposals benefit from a clear translational or clinical context.
Attend and present at ATA meetings — increases visibility and manuscript/abstract experience for future applications.
Plan to build preliminary data — pilot ATA funding often seeds larger national grant proposals.
