✅ 1. Relevance to Hospital Pharmacy Practice
All CSHP Foundation grants are intended to advance hospital pharmacy practice, optimize pharmacotherapy, or enhance patient care outcomes in hospital or collaborative healthcare environments.
A strong application clearly frames the problem in terms of hospital pharmacy priorities and practical impact rather than purely academic research. Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists
Tip:
Explicitly describe how your project will improve practice, address unmet needs, or enhance patient care in hospitals.
✅ 2. Alignment With Specific Grant Objectives
Each grant type has a different focus:
🎯 Research Grants — Typically support clinical or practice research projects addressing pharmacy practice issues. CSHP
🎯 Innovation Grants (William McLean) — Fund innovative practice programs, models, services, or technologies to improve patient outcomes or pharmacy workflow. Pure research studies are not eligible under this mechanism. CSHP
🎯 Education Grants — Support education, knowledge transfer, or professional development activities that benefit CSHP members. Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists
🎯 Thematic Grants (e.g., Sustainability) — Target specific emerging priority areas such as environmental sustainability in pharmacy practice. Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists
Predictor:
Tailor your application to the specific expectations and eligible activities of the grant you’re targeting — this matters more than general research excellence.
✅ 3. Established Evaluation Criteria & Review Process
CSHP Foundation grants are reviewed by a Foundation Research or Education Committee against established criteria, and recommendations go to the CSHP Foundation Board for final approval. Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists
Typical elements reviewed include:
Clarity and relevance of project objectives
Methodology or activity plan
Feasibility within the proposed timeline
Realistic budget and justification
Potential impact on practice, education, or patient outcomes
Qualifications and experience of applicant(s)
For Education Grants, applications must achieve a minimum score on the established criteria to be considered for funding. Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists
Predictor:
Directly address each review criterion in your narrative rather than leaving it implied.
✅ 4. Demonstrated Feasibility and Impact
Even if CSHP grants are generally smaller and aimed at practice-oriented projects, reviewers still assess whether the proposal is feasible and has clear, measurable outcomes.
This includes:
Practical methods or implementation strategies
Anticipated outputs and outcomes (e.g., enhanced workflow, staff training, patient safety metrics)
Timelines that match the grant duration (often < 18 months for Innovation Grants) CSHP
Predictor:
Outline clear deliverables and a timeline with specific checkpoints.
✅ 5. Budget Justification and Resource Plan
Grants like the William McLean Innovation Grant allow certain operational expenses (salary support, project costs) but have eligibility rules (e.g., not covering research studies or technology infrastructure). CSHP
Predictor:
Prepare a tight budget tied directly to project deliverables and ensure eligible use of funds under the specific grant rules.
✅ 6. Investigator Qualifications and Membership Status
Applicants for most CSHP Foundation grants must be CSHP members (or members-in-training/ student supporters) for a specified period (typically ≥ 12 months). Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists
A strong track record (prior projects, publications, leadership roles) increases confidence in the applicant’s ability to complete the project.
Predictor:
Maintain active CSHP membership and include relevant experience in your CV or narrative.
✅ 7. Clear, Well-Structured Application Documents
Successful applications concisely address:
Problem or gap statement
Objectives and expected outcomes
Methods or education plan
Budget & justification
Feasibility and risk mitigation
Relevance to CSHP goals
Predictor:
Well-written, logically structured applications are easier for committees to evaluate and score highly.
🧪 Research Grants
Focus on practice-relevant questions (e.g., medication safety, service delivery improvements). CSHP
Include research ethics board approval processes and timelines in your plan.
Success predictor:
Demonstrate clear practical implications of your research for hospital pharmacy.
💡 William McLean Innovation Grant
Clearly describe the innovation and how it improves practice (e.g., new care model, service workflow improvement). CSHP
Since research studies are excluded, emphasize practical implementation and evaluation in real settings.
📘 Education Grants
Proposals should outline professional development activities, knowledge translation strategies, and anticipated benefits to pharmacists or pharmacy teams. Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists
Tie your educational initiative to betterment of patient care or practice excellence.
Success predictor:
Define measurable learning objectives and how outcomes will be assessed.
| Predictor | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Fit to grant purpose | Ensures eligibility & relevance to reviewers |
| Clear impact on patient care or practice | Core CSHP Foundation mission Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists |
| Feasible plan with milestones | Demonstrates deliverability |
| Solid budget aligned with eligible costs | Avoids disqualification |
| CSHP membership & professional experience | Eligibility and credibility |
| Clarity of writing and structure | Helps reviewers assess criteria |
Unlike large federal bodies, CSHP Foundation grants emphasize practice applicability, feasibility and direct benefit to hospital pharmacy practice, not just theoretical or basic research. Illustrating practical outcomes, clear plans, and real improvements in care or education strongly increases your chance of success in these competitions.
Applicants for accredited hospital pharmacy residency programs must have graduated (or be about to graduate) from a CCAPP-accredited faculty of pharmacy or otherwise be eligible for licensure in a Canadian province. While CSHP membership is not required to apply for the matching service (PRAMS), those who match are required to become CSHP members by the start of their residency.
