AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Demonstrated commitment to an emergency medicine research career (highest predictor)

This is one of the few factors explicitly highlighted by SAEMF across all grant programs.

SAEMF states that greater consideration is given to applicants who demonstrate a sustained commitment to:

  • Emergency medicine-focused research
  • Academic emergency medicine
  • Research presentations
  • Peer-reviewed publications
  • National and international research activities
  • Long-term research career development

Applicants are scored on both their stated and demonstrated commitment to emergency medicine research.

2. Strong mentorship and research training plan (very high predictor)

For career-development awards such as the RTG, the primary purpose is investigator development rather than simply funding a project.

Successful applications typically demonstrate:

  • Experienced mentor(s)
  • Structured research training
  • Methodology training
  • Clear career-development goals
  • Protected research time
  • Regular mentorship meetings

The RTG specifically aims to provide intensive training and mentorship to develop future emergency medicine researchers.

3. High-quality, hypothesis-driven emergency medicine research

Competitive projects generally address important questions in:

  • Emergency medicine
  • Critical care
  • Toxicology
  • Ultrasound
  • Geriatric emergency medicine
  • Health services research
  • Clinical operations
  • Medical education
  • Disaster preparedness
  • Global emergency medicine

Reviewers favor studies with:

  • Strong scientific rationale
  • Clear hypotheses
  • Rigorous methodology
  • Appropriate statistical plans
  • Feasible timelines

4. Strong publication and presentation record

Successful applicants commonly demonstrate:

  • First-author publications
  • Peer-reviewed manuscripts
  • Scientific abstracts
  • Oral presentations
  • National meeting participation

SAEMF explicitly lists publication quality and research presentations as indicators of research commitment and competitiveness.

5. Strong institutional and departmental research environment

SAEMF places substantial emphasis on the host department.

Competitive institutions typically demonstrate:

  • Active emergency medicine research programs
  • Funded investigators
  • Ongoing IRB-approved studies
  • Formal research curricula
  • Research support personnel
  • Dedicated research infrastructure

Reviewers assess whether the institution can support the applicant's development into an independent investigator.

6. Potential for future external funding

A major objective of SAEMF funding is creating investigators who later obtain:

  • NIH funding
  • Federal grants
  • Foundation grants
  • Independent research support

Projects that generate:

  • Preliminary data
  • Pilot findings
  • Proof-of-concept evidence

for future larger grants are particularly attractive.

7. Active involvement in SAEM

This is a unique predictor compared with many other societies.

SAEMF specifically notes that applicants may receive more favorable consideration if they demonstrate:

  • SAEM membership involvement
  • Committee participation
  • SAEM presentations
  • Academy participation
  • Leadership activities within SAEM

This reflects the Foundation's goal of building future leaders in academic emergency medicine.

8. Leadership potential in academic emergency medicine

Programs such as the Education Research Training Grant specifically seek applicants who show:

  • Leadership potential
  • Academic advancement potential
  • Educational leadership
  • Research independence

Strong applicants usually present a clear long-term vision for becoming leaders in emergency medicine research or education.

The Applicant

The applicant for any SAEMF Grant must be a member of SAEM in good standing at application deadline and during the entire award period. Additional applicant eligibility criteria for each grant can be found in the Request for Applications for each grant. For grants that require Faculty membership in SAEM, this may include Fellows.

For all SAEMF grants, greater consideration for receipt of the award will be given to applicants who:

  1. Demonstrate a sustained interest in and commitment to emergency medicine-focused research and a research career. This demonstrated commitment may include the number of years involved in research or emergency medicine-focused research; number and quality of emergency medicine-focused research publications and presentations; research presentations at scientific meetings; and local, regional, national and international activities focused on research or emergency medicine-focused research. Applicants will be judged and scored according to their expressed and demonstrated commitment to these areas. Applicants who provide evidence of this commitment may receive more favorable scores. Greater involvement in topic areas applicable to the research proposal (e.g., toxicology, critical care, etc) will also be considered.
  2. Demonstrate evidence of involvement in SAEM activities and functions. Demonstrated involvement includes active participation in SAEM activities and functions (e.g., SAEM presentations and committee membership). Applicants will be judged and scored according to their expressed and demonstrated commitment to SAEM. Applicants who provide evidence of this commitment may receive more favorable scores.

For the Emergency Department Benchmarking Alliance Grant, greater consideration for receipt of the award will be given to applicants who:

  1. Utilize the EDBA dataset.
  2. Demonstrate a sustained interest in and commitment to a career in administrative leadership or research relating to ED operations and care delivery. This demonstrated commitment may include training in ED operation leadership or research including but not limited to fellowship or other training, the number of years involved in research or emergency medicine-focused research or operations leadership; number and quality of research or emergency medicine-focused research or quality improvement publications and presentations; presentations at scientific, or operations improvement/innovation meetings; and local, regional, national and international activities focused on ED operations improvement or research. Applicants will be judged and scored according to their expressed and demonstrated commitment to these areas. Applicants who provide evidence of this commitment may receive more favorable scores.
  4. Demonstrate evidence of involvement in EDBA activities and functions. Demonstrated involvement includes active participation in EDBA activities and functions (e.g., EDBA presentations and committee membership). Applicants will be judged and scored according to their expressed and demonstrated commitment to EDBA. Applicants who provide evidence of this commitment may receive more favorable scores.
