The Brain Prize 10 million DKK (approx. 1,3 million €) is a personal research prize awarded annually by the Lundbeck Foundation.
The Brain Prize is awarded to one or more scientists, who have distinguished themselves by an outstanding contribution to neuroscience and who are still active in research.
The Brain Prize recognizes highly original and influential advances in any area of brain research, defined as research on any aspects of the brain and the nervous system in health and disease.
The rewarded research must – in an international perspective – be outstanding
If several researchers have contributed significantly to this achievement, nomination of more than one individual is encouraged. Nominees can be of any nationality. Only nominated candidates will be considered for The Brain Prize.
The Brain Prize winners are selected by an independent Selection Committee of leading neuroscientists. It is the task of the Selection Committee to decide in each individual case, what characterizes the research as outstanding and therefore deserves the prize.
Key dates
Deadline for nomination: 1st of September, 2025.
The Lundbeck Foundation consistently serves as a strong predictor of career impact—nurturing scientists across early, mid, and senior stages and accelerating their contributions to neuroscience and health sciences.
1. Prestigious Recognition: The Brain Prize
Established in 2011 (formerly the Grete Lundbeck European Brain Research Prize), the Brain Prize is among the world's most prestigious neuroscience awards.
Comprising DKK 10 million (~€1.3 million), it honors active researchers who have made outstanding contributions to brain science.
Past laureates include pioneers in optogenetics, synaptic plasticity, computational neuroscience, and neurodegenerative disease—many of whom have gone on to lead global research agendas.
2. Targeted Career Development Grants
Lundbeck Foundation Fellowships
These starting-grant style awards support outstanding early-career researchers (within ~8 years of PhD) in establishing independent research teams in Denmark.
Grants can exceed DKK 10 million over 5 years.
Start-Up Programme
Geared toward hire packages in neuroscience, this scheme offers:
Up to DKK 6 million for associate professor recruits,
Up to DKK 10 million for full professors, over 4 years.
Supports institutional recruitment of distinguished researchers to Denmark.
3. Substantial Early-Career Support
In 2025, the Foundation awarded DKK 68 million to 27 early-career neuroscience researchers via Postdoc and Early-Career Clinician Scientist Grants at Aarhus University.
Grants averaged ~DKK 2.48 million, enabling impactful studies—from mental health and schizophrenia to neuroimmune interactions.
Earlier, in 2021, 33 postdoctoral fellows received DKK 69 million across Denmark, with awards of ~DKK 2 million over 2–3 years.
4. Nurturing Emerging Talent
The Scholar Stipends in Pharmaceutical Neuroscience program supports master’s students with six-month research extensions to deepen laboratory experience. Each scholarship offers ~DKK 82,000.
5. Broader Leadership and Equity Initiatives
The Foundation backs mentorship and leadership development, such as a EUR 63,800 grant to WiLD (Women in Life Science Denmark) for its Female Leadership Mentoring Program—fostering representation and upward mobility in life sciences.
| Program / Grant Type | Purpose & Career Impact |
|---|---|
| Brain Prize | Honors global neuroscience leaders; elevates visibility |
| Fellowships & Start-Up Grants | Builds independent research groups and institutional leadership |
| Postdoc / Early-Career Grants | Seed ambitious health neuroscience projects |
| Master’s Stipends | Launches students into research careers |
| Mentorship Initiatives | Supports leadership equity and diversity in science |
The Lundbeck Foundation’s layered funding—from students to global neuroscience icons—offers a clear trajectory for research success. Securing their support is a notable signal of innovation, impact, and leadership potential in biomedical and clinical sciences.
