If you have been active in one or more of the above areas, we’d love to hear from you! To apply, please submit either a 1,000-word narrative, visual abstract, or a video detailing the activities you have been involved with, plus a brief written description of your research explaining why you should be considered for this award to bacr@leeds.ac.uk by 31st March.
The applications will be considered by a panel convened by the BACR Executive Committee, including Dr Vicky Forster, Manager of patient and community engagement at the research institute at Women's College Hospital in Toronto, science communicator, childhood cancer survivor and inaugural student member of the BACR Executive.
Applicants will be notified of the outcome within three months of the closing date. The successful candidate will receive a monetary prize of £250 and a certificate.
Note:
A condition of this award is that the successful student will be expected to write a blog and/or a video for the BACR website within one month of receiving the award.
Competitive BACR funding and awards are generally evaluated on the following strengths:
✔ Alignment With Cancer Research Priorities
Applications should clearly demonstrate relevance to cancer biology, translational science, clinical challenges or ways to advance cancer research understanding. Evidence of a coherent scientific aim or learning goal (for travel or exchange) strengthens competitiveness. BACR
✔ Scientific Merit & Clear Rationale
Successful applicants present a clear scientific summary supporting their research or travel purpose — for example, making the case for new collaborations, skills acquisition, or conference presentations directly related to their project. Applicants who articulate a cogent purpose for the funding (e.g., how a trip will enhance a current research project) score well. Hinchilla
✔ Early Career Trajectory and Impact
Many BACR bursaries and awards target students and early career researchers. Demonstrating research productivity, clear plans for future work, and how the funding will support career progression is central. Hinchilla
✔ Membership Engagement
Membership in BACR — including consistent involvement in society meetings, events, or volunteering — signals commitment to the community and can be important for eligibility and positive reviewer perception. BACR
✔ Demonstrated Deliverables
In travel and bursary applications, strong proposals specify deliverables (e.g., presenting a poster, delivering a talk, conducting a workshop) and show how the activity will advance the applicant’s research or professional network. Hinchilla
✔ Join BACR early: Many awards require active membership of a certain duration (e.g., at least one year). BACR
✔ Prepare abstracts well: Travel awards often depend on having an accepted abstract for a conference — quality of the abstract can differentiate candidates. Hinchilla
✔ Align with objectives: Tailor your narrative to focus on how the award will specifically advance your research, collaboration plans, or career development in cancer research. BACR
✔ Secure mentor support: Especially for early career awards, a strong supporting statement from a supervisor or collaborator helps frame feasibility and impact. Hinchilla
