The Summer Research Training Program at Illinois is one of many similar programs nationally and internationally. It is funded in part by the National Institutes of Health and in part by the Boehringer Ingelheim Veterinary Scholars Program. Students receive a stipend for participation in the program.
During the 10-week program, students are expected to:
Selection Process
Whether you’re targeting internal campus awards (CRB, college funds) or external fellowships/grants, the following factors strongly correlate with competitive success.
🧠 1) Strong Alignment with Strategic Priorities
Projects that match UIUC’s research priorities — interdisciplinary innovation, societal impact, and scholarly excellence — tend to be more competitive. Internal panels often assess how well proposals advance the campus mission. Illinois Research
Tip: Read the funding program’s goals carefully and tailor project language to them.
📊 2) Feasible, Well-Structured Proposals
Reviewers look for:
Clear research questions and objectives
Strong methodology and timeline
Realistic budget and justification
Junior and senior applicants alike benefit from clearly delineated research plans.
👨🔬 3) Documented Investigator Capability
For faculty awards and external grants alike, a track record of relevant publications, prior funded work (even internal), and demonstrated potential for project completion increases confidence.
Tip: Emphasize relevant experience and contributions, especially in proposals or fellowship CVs.
🤝 4) Mentorship and Support Structures
For student funding (especially undergraduate and graduate), strong mentorship letters increase competitiveness. Panels want evidence that the project will be supported by committed advisors.
Tip: Involve mentors early and ensure letters are specific and substantive.
🧪 5) Interdisciplinary & Collaborative Components
Many internal seed programs (e.g., CSBS Small Grants, BRIDGE) and competitive external opportunities favor interdisciplinary collaboration — combining expertise across units improves reviewer perceptions of impact and innovation. Illinois Research
🌍 6) Leverage Libraries and Support Resources
Using:
Library research support for literature grounding
Workshops on proposal writing and data plans
OVCRI’s funding lists and limited submission notices
…can noticeably strengthen applications.
📣 7) Persistence and Timely Revisions
Grant success often comes after multiple drafts and critical feedback. Internal reviews (from advisors or IDEAS workshops) can catch weaknesses early.
