Standard Awards

BrightFocus Foundation

AWARD OVERVIEW (UPDATED)

The Standard Award Program is divided into two distinct tracks:

  • Early Career Track

This research grant program supports early-career investigators pursuing innovative research in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). Applicants must be within 15 years of receiving their MD, PhD, or equivalent and hold a position at an eligible institution that allows them to serve as Principal Investigator.

  • Independent Investigator Track

This award supports highly competitive, innovation-driven research with the potential to significantly advance understanding of ADRD. Applicants must hold an independent research position at an eligible institution and should not hold an active R01 (or equivalent) for the same or closely related research topic.

Applicants must apply to one track only. Eligibility requirements differ by track (see below).

Award Amount: $100,000 per year (total value $300,000)
Duration: up to 3 years
Start Date: July 01, 2027

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Strong relevance to the Foundation's disease priorities (highest predictor)

This is the most important review criterion.

Projects must directly address one or more of BrightFocus' three research areas:

  • Alzheimer's disease and related dementias
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Glaucoma

Reviewers explicitly assess whether the proposal addresses an important scientific problem or critical barrier to progress in understanding, diagnosing, preventing, or treating these diseases.

2. Scientific significance and potential impact (very high predictor)

BrightFocus formally evaluates Significance as a primary review criterion.

Competitive proposals typically:

  • Address an important unmet need
  • Advance scientific knowledge
  • Improve diagnostic or therapeutic approaches
  • Change current concepts or clinical practice
  • Have the potential to substantially improve patient outcomes

Applications with the potential to make a meaningful impact on the field are highly competitive.

3. Innovation and high-risk/high-reward science (very high predictor)

Innovation is a core component of BrightFocus funding.

The Foundation specifically encourages:

  • Novel hypotheses
  • Innovative technologies
  • Creative experimental approaches
  • High-risk/high-reward ideas
  • Interdisciplinary research

Incremental projects that could readily receive conventional government funding are generally less competitive. BrightFocus prefers bold ideas capable of opening new directions in research.

4. Strong investigator qualifications and research team

Reviewers formally assess the qualifications of:

  • Principal Investigator (PI)
  • Co-Principal Investigators
  • Collaborators
  • Research team

Competitive applicants demonstrate:

  • Appropriate expertise
  • Strong publication record
  • Scientific accomplishments
  • Complementary multidisciplinary expertise when applicable

Early-stage investigators are evaluated based on their training, experience, and future potential.

5. Rigorous methodology and feasibility

BrightFocus evaluates the Approach of every proposal.

Strong applications include:

  • Clear hypotheses
  • Robust experimental design
  • Appropriate statistical analysis
  • Feasible timeline
  • Well-defined milestones
  • Plans to address potential challenges

Reviewers seek confidence that the project can realistically achieve its aims.

6. Strong research environment and institutional support

The Foundation considers whether the research environment provides:

  • Appropriate facilities
  • Specialized equipment
  • Institutional support
  • Access to required resources
  • Collaborative opportunities

A strong institutional environment increases confidence in successful project completion.

7. Potential to generate preliminary data for future funding

A defining objective of BrightFocus grants is to support projects that generate pilot data leading to larger awards.

Competitive proposals often demonstrate the potential to support future applications to:

  • NIH
  • NEI
  • NIA
  • Industry
  • Other major foundations

Projects serving as a springboard to larger translational programs are particularly attractive.

8. Early-career investigator development

Many BrightFocus grant mechanisms target investigators within approximately the first 12 years of their independent careers.

Competitive early-career applicants typically demonstrate:

  • Research independence
  • Strong mentorship
  • Institutional commitment
  • Clear career-development trajectory

The Foundation has a strong track record of helping launch successful independent investigators.

9. Reasonable and well-justified budget

Budget is a formal review consideration.

Competitive proposals provide:

  • Appropriate resource allocation
  • Clear budget justification
  • Efficient use of Foundation funds

Budgets should closely match the proposed scope of work.

Beginning in 2027, the Standard Award Program is divided into two tracks, the early career and independent investigator, each designed to support innovative research in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). Both tracks require:

  • Applicants must serve as the Principal Investigator on the project and have dedicated laboratory space. The applicant should use the indicated space on the application forms to clarify any position that is not immediately recognizable as an independent research position
  • While some of the grant can be used to support salary for the PI, the percent requested should be limited to the lesser of 35% of the yearly grant request, or 35% of the individual’s salary. Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) salaries are capped at the lesser of 25% of the yearly grant request, or 25% of the individual’s salary.
  • Applicants may currently be working in a non-profit, governmental, academic research institution, or at a for-profit including start-up and biotech institution
  • An individual laboratory may hold only one active Standard Award and one Postdoctoral Fellowship at a time
  • Multiple submissions within each program from the same lab are discouraged as you would be competing against one another
  • If applying for Standard and Postdoctoral Fellowship within the same lab, be sure to have distinct projects with unique specific aims

Early Career Track Eligibility

  • Applicants must hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree and be within 15 years of degree conferral
  • Applicants must serve as Principal Investigator and hold a position that permits independent research and grant management
  • Applicants may be based at academic, nonprofit, governmental, or for-profit research institutions

Proposals should demonstrate strong scientific rigor, clear relevance to ADRD, and the potential to advance investigator independence. Innovative and cross-disciplinary approaches are encouraged.

Independent Investigator Eligibility

  • Applicants must hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree and must not be eligible for the early career track
  • Applicants must hold an independent research position at an eligible institution
  • Applicants should not hold an active R01 (or equivalent) for the same or closely related research topic
  • Applicants from outside the Alzheimer’s field (e.g., cancer biology, physics, engineering, AI/ML) are strongly encouraged

Proposals are expected to demonstrate exceptional innovation, strong scientific rigor, and a clear connection to ADRD. Cross-disciplinary approaches and novel perspectives are prioritized.
