SPR Research and Education Foundation Education Project Award

Society for Pediatric Radiology

The SPR Research and Education Foundation Education Project Grant is intended to encourage innovation and improvement in health sciences education by providing research opportunities to individuals in pursuit of advancing the science of radiology education. In addition, this program will help build a critical mass of radiology education researchers and promote the careers of persons advancing the science of radiology education. Awards will be based on merit, including expertise and available resources, but should also endeavor to focus on education and learning related to unique aspects of imaging or image-guided therapy/intervention in children, promote the importance of imaging or imaging expertise in improving health care in children, cultivate multidisciplinary cooperation, and provide opportunities for additional funding. Projects will be preferred which lead to the creation of enduring web-based or electronic resources to improve teaching and learning of pediatric radiology and which can be disseminated without charge to SPR members and via the World Federation of Pediatric Imaging.

Types of Projects-All areas of radiology education research are eligible for support, including:

Development of new educational programs or the improvement of existing programs
Development of new curricula
Pilot studies that assess methods of teaching to confirm or refute value
Novel approaches to core teaching skills
Evaluation of educational techniques, materials, or programs (curricula, courses, workshops, digital apps, computer-based solutions)
Improving methods of student, teacher, course, or program evaluation
Education in low- and middle-resource environments
Expanding knowledge of how to provide effective education in the radiologic sciences
Introducing artificial intelligence to assist in teaching and learning

Amount: Up to $50,000 support for 18 months; funds may not be used for salary support of the principal investigator (PI).

Important Requirements:

If any member (PI or co-PI) of the research team has an outstanding grant with the SPR Research and Education Foundation, a status update must be provided before applying for a new grant. For assistance, contact the SPR office at info@spr.org.
If accepted, the PI understands they will be expected to participate in up to two years of grant reviews for the Foundation.

Selection Criteria
A review panel consisting of SPR REF Board members and others with expertise in the areas and topics of each grant will review the application for merit and appropriateness for funding. Final decisions will be subject to the approval of the Board of Directors of the Research & Education Foundation. Applicants will be notified in writing of the disposition of their applications. Depending on the nature of the proposal, one or more of the following guidelines may be applied in the review process:

Is the project topic aligned with the announced SPR Foundation Grant priorities?
Does the proposal have relevance to children's' health care through education?
What effect might this educational endeavor have on the existing state of knowledge in:
- Diagnosis and/or treatment of disease?
- Morbidity and/or mortality?
- Utilization of resources for patient care?
- Patient safety?
- Education of physicians, scientists and the public?

Application Procedure

Applicants will complete the online form and will upload the required documents as the form directs.
The deadline for receipt of applications is February 8. In years when the 8th falls on the weekend, the deadline is extended until the following Monday.
The funding announcements will take place at the annual SPR meeting. Candidates will be officially notified of funding decisions shortly after the SPR meeting.

Administration of Award
The SPR Research & Education Foundation does not pay institutional indirect costs, PI salary support, or overhead. Travel expenses for the SPR Annual Meeting may not be paid for by this grant. Unexpended funds must be returned to the Foundation.

Payments: SPR Research and Education Foundation awards will be made to the organizing department.

Eligibility Requirements

The project leader must be a member of the Society for Pediatric Radiology at the time of application.
Applicants must hold a full-time faculty position in an educational institution at the time the award commences.
Applicants must be in a department of diagnostic radiology, radiation oncology, interventional radiology, or nuclear medicine and have completed all advanced training.
Research fellows with a medical degree (MD, DO, or its equivalent) and a focus on pediatric radiology research and, if possible, with the plan to pursue pediatric radiology, are eligible to apply as long as all other requirements are met.
The Foundation will accept only one application per grant category from a Department.
