The SDMS Foundation Sonography Student Scholarship Program provides a $2,500 scholarship to a sonography student who has been accepted or is currently enrolled in an educational program in diagnostic medical sonography or cardiovascular technology that has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs (CAAHEP). Two (2) sonography student scholarships will be awarded each year. Scholarships can be used for tuition, books, or educational fees.

Scholarship Process
1. Strong Relevance to Diagnostic Medical Sonography
For research grants: the project must focus on an issue directly relevant to sonography — whether improving imaging technique, patient care quality, safety/ergonomics for sonographers, education/training in sonography, or technology/physics of ultrasound.
For student or advanced-degree scholarships: applicant should be enrolled (or accepted) in an accredited sonography or cardiovascular-technology program (or related advanced degree).
Predictor: The stronger and more specific the tie to sonography practice, education, or improvement — the better.
2. Clear Hypothesis or Educational / Training Goal + Feasible Plan
Research proposals must be well-defined, with a clear research question, feasible methodology (data collection/analysis), and realistic scope given the modest funding (US $1,000–5,000)
For scholarship/training/grant-to-attend-conference proposals — clear demonstration of need or benefit (tuition support, certification exam support, education benefit) improves competitiveness.
Predictor: Well-structured, realistic proposals with clearly articulated aims or goals for educational/grant support are favored.
3. Demonstrated Institutional or Program Support, and Ethical/Regulatory Compliance (when relevant)
For research involving human subjects or patient data: applicants must provide proof of Institutional Review Board (IRB) or Human Subjects Research approval (as applicable).
The applicant’s employer, institution, or training program must support the time and/or resources required for the project — demonstrating feasibility.
Predictor: Institutional backing and regulatory compliance strengthen the proposal.
4. Commitment to Dissemination — Publishing / Sharing Results
The SDMS Foundation expects recipients of Research Grants (and undergraduate research grants) to submit their findings to the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JDMS) for possible publication.
This ensures that funded research contributes to the wider sonography community’s knowledge base.
Predictor: Proposals that plan for publication and broader dissemination signal value for the community and are looked upon favorably.
5. Suitability of Scope & Budget to Funding Level
Given that SDMS funding for research grants ranges around US $1,000 to US $5,000, successful proposals typically have a modest, focused scope — pilot studies, small-scale observations, audits, quality/improvement studies, training or equipment upgrades, not large-scale trials.
For scholarships and educational grants — budget should match realistic costs (tuition fees, certification exam fees, conference attendance, etc.) and demonstrate need or benefit.
Predictor: Realistically scoped proposals aligned to funding amounts have higher success likelihood.
6. Continuous Sonography-Specific Membership and Eligibility Compliance
To apply for most SDMS Foundation grants or scholarships, the applicant must be a current member of SDMS at both time of application and payment.
For student scholarships: enrollment in a CAAHEP-accredited sonography program is required.
Predictor: Ensuring all eligibility criteria (membership + accreditation/enrollment) are met is essential; non-compliance immediately disqualifies the application.
7. For Student/Training-Focused Grants: Clear Benefit to Career Development
Scholarships (student or advanced-degree) should clearly help in achieving certification, advancing education, or reducing financial burden — demonstrating how the grant contributes to the applicant’s professional growth.
For Clinical Instructor grants: demonstrating mentorship, teaching impact, and contribution to training environment adds value.
Predictor: Proposals that articulate how the award advances the applicant’s education or career in sonography are more competitive.
| ✅ Item | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Proposal/study is directly related to sonography or sonography education/training | Must align with SDMS purpose |
| Clear aims or goals, with a feasible plan and timeline | Funding is modest; must be realistic |
| Applicant is current SDMS member + meets any program-specific eligibility (enrollment/accreditation) | Eligibility requirement |
| Institutional program support / IRB or regulatory approval (if required) | Demonstrates feasibility & compliance |
| Budget matches scope and funding limits | Avoids over-ambitious/unrealistic proposals |
| Plan for dissemination/publication (especially for research) | Maximizes community benefit |
| For education/training grants: clear benefit to career path (tuition/exam/conference support) | Aligns with scholarship intent |
| Compliance with grant submission guidelines (forms, deadlines, membership status) | Prevents administrative rejection |
| If clinical-instructor or training-related: demonstration of teaching/mentorship role and impact | Reflects teaching/training benefit |
| For student grants: proof of enrollment in accredited program + supporting documents | Eligibility + fairness |
Failure to meet any of the following scholarship eligibility requirements will result in an application being disqualified. If disqualified, the applicant's response to the essay questions will not be reviewed/considered.
