Sir Harcourt Caughey Award

Auckland Medical Research Foundation

Objective
The Auckland Medical Research Foundation’s (AMRF) vision is to improve the health and quality of life for all New Zealanders. We aim to achieve this by providing genuine advances in health, science and medicine through funding the highest quality medical research of all kinds.

Funding area
The AMRF’s research funding area is limited to all recognised tertiary institutions, Te Whatu Ora (TWOs) and Crown Research Institutes (CRIs) and other recognised host institutions with sites in the greater Auckland and Northland region of New Zealand. The principal investigator/grant holder must be affiliated with a host institution within this area, and the majority of work should be undertaken within this area, but co-applicants can come from, and part of the research can be performed, outside our catchment area - either nationally or internationally.

How to apply
Use the on-line application form provided, after first creating an account. The application must be created and submitted from the PI's portal account.

Purpose of the grant

There are three different categories for this Award:

  1. Be a graduate of New Zealand who, having trained in research overseas, is returning to New Zealand to a part-time appointment in Auckland and who has sufficient experience in research to deserve part-time support (or similar to a part-time Senior Research Fellowship) in such research; This grant is a personal award, and once awarded, is non-transferable to another person.
  2. Be a New Zealand medical graduate in Auckland who is deserving of assistance to train in a specific field overseas and to undertake research in that area, especially where there is a local deficiency in expertise in that field. This award is a personal grant, and once awarded, is non-transferable to another person; or,
  3. Be sufficiently prestigious in a particular field of medical knowledge and/or research to visit Auckland, normally for 3-4 weeks, to foster interest & research in that speciality.

Value of grant
Up to $25,000.

Tenue of grant
Dependent on the category applied for.

Number of grants awarded
The AMRF offers one to two each year, but may consider more on the available funds and quality of applications.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Strong scientific and medical relevance

The most competitive applications directly address:

  • biomedical research,
  • clinical medicine,
  • public and population health,
  • translational medicine,
  • neuroscience,
  • infectious diseases,
  • cancer research,
  • cardiovascular disease,
  • health-system improvement.

AMRF funds a broad range of health research but strongly prioritizes projects with clear medical significance.

2. Clear translational or patient impact

AMRF reviewers strongly favor proposals likely to:

  • improve patient outcomes,
  • advance diagnostics,
  • support therapeutic innovation,
  • influence healthcare delivery,
  • address major public-health challenges.

Applications with realistic pathways toward clinical or health-system benefit tend to score highly.

3. Strong methodological rigor

Competitive proposals generally demonstrate:

  • robust experimental or clinical design,
  • realistic recruitment and timelines,
  • validated methodologies,
  • appropriate statistical planning,
  • reproducibility,
  • feasible milestones.

Weak methodology is a major predictor of rejection.

4. Strong preliminary data

Successful applications frequently include:

  • pilot data,
  • feasibility studies,
  • prior publications,
  • proof-of-concept findings,
  • preliminary translational evidence.

Strong early evidence substantially improves reviewer confidence.

5. Strong investigator track record

Important predictors include:

  • peer-reviewed publications,
  • prior grants,
  • technical expertise,
  • conference presentations,
  • evidence of research independence,
  • academic productivity.

For fellowships, scientific trajectory and long-term potential are heavily weighted.

6. Strong mentorship and institutional support

For doctoral scholarships and career-development fellowships, reviewers strongly assess:

  • mentor expertise,
  • institutional infrastructure,
  • protected research time,
  • collaborative environment,
  • access to facilities and patient cohorts.

AMRF explicitly supports emerging researchers and career advancement.

7. Alignment with AMRF funding mechanisms

Applications perform better when carefully matched to the appropriate mechanism, including:

  • Project Grants,
  • Career Advancement Fellowships,
  • Doctoral Scholarships,
  • Travelling Fellowships,
  • Repatriation Fellowships.

Misalignment between project scope and funding category is a common weakness.

8. Innovation balanced with feasibility

High-scoring proposals usually combine:

  • novel scientific ideas,
  • advanced technologies,
  • interdisciplinary approaches,
  • translational innovation

with realistic execution plans and achievable milestones.

9. Regional and collaborative relevance

AMRF funding primarily supports research led from the Auckland/Northland region, though collaborations can be national or international.

Applications with:

  • strong institutional collaboration,
  • regional healthcare impact,
  • international partnerships,
  • multidisciplinary integration

often receive stronger evaluations.

10. Potential for future external funding

Reviewers favor projects likely to:

  • generate larger national/international grants,
  • support long-term research programs,
  • produce high-impact publications,
  • establish sustainable investigator careers.

AMRF funding is often viewed as seed or career-development support.

Common Reasons for Rejection

Frequent reviewer concerns include:

  • insufficient preliminary data,
  • weak methodological detail,
  • unrealistic project scope,
  • unclear translational significance,
  • poor alignment with funding category,
  • limited feasibility evidence,
  • inadequate mentorship plans,
  • weak statistical analysis.

Highest-Probability Applicant Profile

The strongest AMRF applications usually combine:

clinically meaningful health problem + strong pilot data + rigorous methodology + productive research trajectory + strong mentorship/institutional support + realistic translational impact

Particularly Competitive Research Areas

Recent AMRF-supported and high-interest areas include:

  • neuroscience,
  • dementia and Parkinson’s disease,
  • infectious diseases,
  • cancer biology,
  • cardiovascular medicine,
  • precision medicine,
  • public-health research,
  • bioengineering,
  • translational therapeutics,
  • health inequities,
  • digital health and AI.

  • Applications may be made by individuals or organisations.
  • To apply as an individual, you must be a New Zealand resident, permanent resident or citizen. Applications from non-New Zealand residents or citizens will not be accepted.
  • The start date of the Award must be after the award date (decision date) of that round. Please check the grant rounds dates on the Applications page on our website.
