AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Strong alignment with Sigma's nursing research priorities (highest predictor)

Sigma explicitly identifies several priority areas:

  • Health promotion and disease prevention
  • Evidence-based practice implementation
  • Social, economic, and political determinants of health
  • Research addressing vulnerable populations
  • Capacity development for nursing research

Projects that clearly address one or more of these priorities tend to be the most competitive.

2. Clear contribution to nursing knowledge and practice (very high predictor)

Sigma's grants are intended to advance nursing through research and improve clinical practice.

Strong proposals typically demonstrate:

  • Direct relevance to nursing practice
  • Potential to improve patient outcomes
  • Clinical applicability
  • Contribution to nursing science
  • Evidence-based care advancement

Projects with a clear pathway from research findings to nursing practice often score highly.

3. Pilot or developmental research with future funding potential

Many Sigma grants are specifically designed to support:

  • Pilot studies
  • Developmental research
  • Early-stage investigations
  • Proof-of-concept projects

Reviewers often favor projects that can generate preliminary data for future NIH, CIHR, NHMRC, foundation, or larger nursing research grants.

4. Strong investigator qualifications

Eligibility for most Sigma grants requires:

  • Registered nurse status (or country equivalent)
  • Current nursing licensure where applicable
  • At least a master's degree in nursing (many grants favor doctoral preparation)

Successful applicants generally demonstrate:

  • Research training
  • Publications or scholarly output
  • Prior presentations
  • Expertise in the proposed topic area

Investigator capability is a major review factor.

5. Feasible methodology and implementation plan

Sigma funds relatively modest grants, so reviewers look carefully at:

  • Focused aims
  • Realistic timeline
  • Appropriate methods
  • Achievable outcomes
  • Reasonable budget

Applicants must generally be ready to begin the project soon after funding and complete it within the grant period.

6. Collaboration and interdisciplinary impact

Sigma frequently supports collaborative grants and international partnerships.

Particularly competitive projects often include:

  • Multidisciplinary teams
  • International collaborations
  • Cross-institutional partnerships
  • Community-engaged research

For example, the Global Nursing Research Grant specifically requires cross-country collaboration and a focus on global health disparities.

7. Global health, health equity, and vulnerable populations

Projects addressing:

  • Health disparities
  • Underserved communities
  • Global health challenges
  • Equity in healthcare delivery
  • Chronic illness management

are strongly aligned with Sigma's stated priorities and frequently appear among funded topics.

8. Strong mentorship and research environment

For doctoral students, early-career investigators, and novice researchers, strong mentorship can significantly improve competitiveness.

Successful applications often include:

  • Experienced research mentors
  • Institutional support
  • Access to study populations
  • Statistical and methodological expertise
  • Adequate research infrastructure

This is especially important for pilot and developmental grants.

The principal investigator must:

  • Be a registered nurse with a master's degree. Team members may be from other disciplines or nurses without master's degrees.
  • Submit a completed research application package and signed research agreement.
  • Be ready to or have already started, the research project.
  • At least one applicant should have previous research experience and knowledge of the research process.
  • The current members of the ENA Board of Directors, ENA Foundation Board of Trustees, Sigma and Sigma Foundation for Nursing board members, ENA Foundation Research Grant Selection Committee as well as the individuals that have served in such positions in the immediate past three (3) years and the spouses and children* of all such individuals are ineligible to apply for a scholarship.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are members of both ENA and Sigma.
