Purpose
The purpose of the Mobilize Grant is to fund knowledge mobilization activities in relevant and practical settings and mediums, with the aim of improving the applicability and impact of health research in Saskatchewan.
Terminology
Knowledge Mobilization
SHRF uses the term knowledge mobilization to refer to all activities used to bring awareness to research activities and findings in a way that can be used in practice. This includes but is not limited to knowledge synthesis (ie. compiling and interpreting information from multiple sources), dissemination (ie. distributing information to others), transfer (ie. sharing skills experience and ideas), exchange (ie. consulting and collaborating learning environments), and co-creation (ie. collaborating with other stakeholders to guide the design process). Knowledge mobilization should encourage exchanges between researchers and knowledge-users.
Knowledge-user
SHRF defines knowledge-users as any individual who could receive and use new knowledge to implement improvements in health – their own health, the health of others or the health system. These individuals may represent organizations that are interested in the practical application of knowledge. A knowledge-user may be a practitioner, health system manager, policymaker, educator, decision-maker, health care administrator, community leader or an individual from a health institution, patient group, government organization, etc.
Objectives
Proposed activities must fulfill the purpose of knowledge mobilization by addressing at least one of the following objectives:
Facilitate the use and integration of health research knowledge and evidence into practice and decision making.
Facilitate the use of relevant knowledge (e.g., lived experiences, traditional knowledge) to inform and guide research activities.
Facilitate the participation of non-academic team members in the research and knowledge sharing process.
Focus Area
This is an open call. Applications may address any area of human health.
For applications that are building relationships and partnering with Indigenous peoples to promote health and wellness through healing and reconciliation, there is dedicated Mobilize Grant funding available year-round.
Amount
Up to $10,000
(No matching funding is required)
Term
The grant provided is for up to one year (12 months)
Multiple Applications
The Principal Applicant can submit only one application per competition.
1. Clear Relevance to Saskatchewan Health Needs
Competitive proposals link directly to current health challenges in the province — whether in disease prevention, health systems improvement, population health or other human health areas.
Why this matters: SHRF’s mission prioritizes impactful research that can improve provincial health outcomes. Application alignment with provincial priorities (e.g., child & youth health, rural health, lung health, dementia) strengthens competitiveness. SHRF
2. Strong Scientific Merit & Originality
Successful grants articulate:
A well-defined research question and hypothesis
Sound, appropriate methods
A feasible research plan with clear objectives and milestones
For the Establishment Grant, reviewers assess rationale, originality, approach, feasibility, and budget as core components of scientific quality. helloDarwin
3. Evidence of Impact & Knowledge Mobilization
SHRF values proposals that go beyond generating knowledge to include plans for knowledge mobilization, dissemination, and translation — particularly into provincial policy or practice.
Predictor: A clear knowledge translation strategy integrated into the work plan. SHRF
4. Team Strength & Engagement with Stakeholders
Proposals that engage diverse expertise — including researchers, clinicians, community partners, and knowledge users (e.g., decision-makers, patient groups) — tend to score higher, especially for Connections and Solutions programs.
Predictor: Inclusion of relevant collaborators with well-defined roles shows capacity for implementation and relevance. SHRF
5. Early-Career Potential and Research Capacity Building
For Capacity programs like the Establishment Grant, success predictors include:
Early-career status with evidence of research potential
Institutional support/mentorship
Plans that will increase research competitiveness and productivity (toward future national funding) SHRF
6. Feasible Budget & Justification
Successful SHRF proposals provide realistic budgets that are well justified, clearly tied to activities, and demonstrate value for money. Use SHRF budget templates and follow guidance carefully. SHRF
7. Compliance With Eligibility & Submission Requirements
Adhering strictly to SHRF eligibility rules — including appointment requirements (e.g., qualifying academic ranks for Establishment Grants), deadline adherence, and complete documentation — is essential.
Predictor: Eligibility checks and following RMS procedures reduce risk of disqualification. SHRF+1
8. Demonstrated Capacity to Attract Future Funding
For some competitions and reviewers, applications that show promise of leading toward larger external funding (e.g., national grants) or have evidence of preliminary success can be more competitive, particularly in the Establishment context. helloDarwin
Although specifics vary by program, reviewers generally assess proposals on:
Scientific & Technical Merit
• Significance of problem
• Innovation and originality
• Clarity of aims and methods
Feasibility & Capacity
• Research plan and timeline
• Team expertise and institutional support
Impact & Relevance
• Relevance to Saskatchewan health context
• Knowledge mobilization and application
Budget & Justification
• Appropriateness of cost estimates
• Connection to research objectives helloDarwin
