SAEMF Geriatric Emergency Medicine Research Catalyst Grant

Purpose of the Award

The SAEMF Geriatric Emergency Medicine Research Catalyst Grant provides $10,000 over a one-year period starting July 1 to address research questions leading to improved emergency care and quality of life of older patients, as well as provide catalyst funding for pursuit of federal or other funding that leads to improving the quality of emergency care received by older patients. This award can also be used for preliminary data collection, analysis, or collection of pilot data that will further support greater research endeavors. Grant proposals should address one or more research priorities below:

  • Development of strategies to improve the diagnoses, prognoses, management and outcomes of emergent conditions in older adults.
  • Improved triage, assessment, prognoses, management and outcome of geriatric trauma including motor vehicle accidents (issues pertaining to older drivers).
  • Reduction in complications due to medication use in older adults including polypharmacy, increased adverse events, medication reconciliation.
  • Research focused on prevention, identification, management outcomes of common geriatric syndromes including falls, cognitive impairment, delirium, multiple chronic conditions, and/or functional decline.
  • Identification and management of elder abuse, suicide risk/prevention and/or substance abuse.
  • Management of pain and/or palliative care in older adults.
  • Strategies to reduce frequent and/or prompt recidivism (recurrent ED revisits) including employing paramedicine, telemedicine and alternative settings to pre-empt ED visits and/or to provide a safe disposition for older adults.
  • Improvement in communication involving primary care providers, caregivers, specialists, hospital staff.
  • Recognition and management strategies of persons with cognitive impairment with emergent conditions including addressing possible environmental and provider contributors.
  • Addressing advance care planning and end-of-life care in the setting of emergent medical issues and/or trauma.

 

Expectations of the Award

The Geriatric Emergency Medicine Research Catalyst Grant proposal is expected to:

  1. Be measurable and reproducible.
  2. Be relevant to geriatric emergency medicine.
  3. Provide evidence-based research that advances the field of geriatric emergency medicine.
  4. Address patient outcomes or education in geriatric emergency medicine.

The Geriatric Emergency Medicine Research Catalyst Grant awardee is expected to:

  1. Attend the SAEM Annual Meeting during the award year.
  2. Submit interim and final progress reports in accordance with SAEMF instructions.
  3. Submit an abstract reporting the results of the research project for presentation at the SAEM Annual Meeting. As the selection of research abstracts is a competitive process, acceptance is not assured.
  4. Publish a manuscript (first-authored by the awardee) arising from the project in a peer-reviewed journal within two years of completing the award.

An applicant for the the Geriatric Emergency Medicine Research Catalyst Grant must:

  1. Be a member of SAEM in good standing at application deadline and during the entire award period.
  2. Have an advanced/doctoral or terminal educational degree (e.g., MD, DO, PhD, PharmD, DSc or equivalent).
  3. Hold a university appointment in or be actively involved (e.g., have an adjunct appointment) with a department or division of emergency medicine or pediatric emergency medicine at the start of the award period. The applicant may work as a clinician at an institution other than the host institution or the institution at which the project will be conducted.
  4. Be an early career researcher, defined as completing initial residency training within eight (8) years of the start of the award period. SAEMF will consider requests for exceptions to this requirement for various reasons, including but not limited to medical concerns, disability, and active-duty military service. Each of these requests is reviewed on a case by case basis, and must be made prior to the application deadline. SAEM will approve an automatic extension of one year for childbirth within the early career period. All extension requests must be made to grants@saem.org before the nomination deadline. Fellowship training does not affect the requirement for defining an early career researcher.
  5. Not have received an SAEMF Geriatric Emergency Medicine Research Catalyst Grant previously.
