Research Support Grants further the development of scientific investigators committed to problems related to oral and maxillofacial surgery. Each grant is $100,000 and is awarded to the institution.

Citizenship

  1. Either the applicant and/or the OMS Co-PI must be a citizen or non-citizen national of the United States or its possessions and territories or must, at least one year prior to signing the application for the Research Support Grant, have been lawfully admitted to the United States or Canada for permanent residence.

No Age Limitations

  1. There is no minimum or maximum age to apply.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Direct Relevance to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The OMS Foundation explicitly states that its research grants are intended to support investigators working on problems related to oral and maxillofacial surgery. Projects that directly address challenges encountered in OMS practice are the most competitive.

Examples include:

  • Craniofacial reconstruction
  • Facial trauma
  • Bone regeneration
  • Dental implant surgery
  • Orthognathic surgery
  • Head and neck pathology
  • TMJ disorders
  • Anesthesia and patient safety
  • Outcomes research

2. Strong Scientific Merit

Applications undergo rigorous peer review and are awarded based on scientific merit. Successful proposals typically demonstrate:

  • Clear hypotheses
  • Appropriate study design
  • Robust methodology
  • Sound statistical planning
  • Well-defined outcome measures

Scientific quality is a primary review consideration.

3. Potential to Improve Patient Care

The Foundation's mission emphasizes improving the quality and safety of patient care through research and innovation. Projects with direct clinical relevance and potential to improve patient outcomes are especially attractive.

Reviewers often favor studies that could:

  • Improve surgical outcomes
  • Reduce complications
  • Enhance recovery
  • Improve treatment planning
  • Increase patient safety

4. Innovation

The OMS Foundation repeatedly highlights innovation as a strategic goal.

Competitive proposals frequently include:

  • Novel surgical approaches
  • Regenerative medicine
  • Biomaterials
  • Tissue engineering
  • Digital surgery technologies
  • Artificial intelligence applications
  • Advanced imaging methods

Projects that advance the specialty beyond current practice often receive favorable consideration.

5. Strong Investigator and Team

Reviewers assess whether the investigative team possesses the expertise necessary to complete the project successfully.

Important strengths include:

  • Relevant publication history
  • Prior research accomplishments
  • Technical expertise
  • Appropriate collaborators
  • Demonstrated productivity

Applications involving experienced OMS investigators generally have an advantage.

6. Feasibility

Successful proposals clearly demonstrate that the project can be completed within the funding period.

Common features include:

  • Realistic timelines
  • Access to patients or specimens
  • Established methodologies
  • Appropriate resources
  • Practical recruitment plans

Feasibility is a critical component of competitive applications.

7. Potential for Future Funding

The Foundation explicitly aims to support early-stage projects that can generate preliminary data for larger grants.

Projects that position investigators for future funding from agencies such as the National Institutes of Health or other major funders are viewed favorably.

8. Clinical and Translational Impact

The Clinical Research Support Grant mechanism specifically emphasizes patient-oriented research.

Competitive projects often:

  • Translate laboratory discoveries into clinical practice
  • Address unmet clinical needs
  • Evaluate surgical interventions
  • Develop evidence-based treatment strategies

Translational relevance strengthens applications considerably.

9. Mentorship and Career Development

For fellowships and early-career programs, reviewer emphasis extends beyond the project itself to the development of the investigator.

Successful applicants frequently demonstrate:

  • Strong mentors
  • Dedicated research training
  • Commitment to an academic OMS career
  • Long-term research goals

The Foundation and related OMS research fellowships emphasize cultivating future surgeon-scientists.

10. Institutional Environment and Collaboration

Strong institutional support improves competitiveness.

Reviewers favor environments offering:

  • Research infrastructure
  • Biostatistical support
  • Core facilities
  • Clinical research resources
  • Interdisciplinary collaborations

Collaborations with basic scientists often strengthen translational proposals.

Frequently Funded Research Themes

Historically, OMS Foundation-supported research has focused on:

  • Bone regeneration and tissue engineering
  • Craniofacial reconstruction
  • Dental implant science
  • Facial trauma management
  • Orthognathic surgery outcomes
  • Temporomandibular joint disorders
  • Anesthesia and patient safety
  • Regenerative medicine
  • Biomaterials
  • Clinical outcomes and quality improvement
  • Head and neck pathology
  • Digital and image-guided surgery

Funding Strategy

A highly competitive OMS Foundation application typically includes:

  1. A clinically important oral and maxillofacial surgery problem.
  2. Strong scientific rigor and feasibility.
  3. Clear relevance to improving patient care.
  4. Innovative methodology or technology.
  5. Experienced investigators and collaborators.
  6. Potential to generate future federal or foundation funding.
  7. A realistic pathway toward advancing the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Applicant must have obtained a doctoral degree.

  1. Applicant oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) must have completed an oral and maxillofacial surgery training program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association (CODA).
  2. If the Prinicipal Investigator (PI) is not an OMS, there must be a qualified OMS as Co-PI.
  3. Preference is given to applications that have a strong and clearly defined role for the oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
  4.  If not the PI, the Co-PI OMSs must have an active role in the project, and the time commitment of the Co-PI must be stated in objective terms (e.g., hours/days per week, days per month).
  5. The OMS Co-PI must contribute at least 10% effort to the project.
  6. The OMS who is the PI or Co-PI, as the case may be, must be a fellow or member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) and must be a donor of the OMS Foundation.
