Research Grants Program

EveryCat Health Foundation

EveryCat Health Foundation, a non-profit organization established in 1968, advances feline health by supporting groundbreaking research and education. Our vision is to address the health needs of cats throughout their entire lifetime by focusing on all aspects of physical, mental, and social well-being. We embrace the One Health model as a critical tool in achieving our vision. EveryCat awards grants to scientists and professionals in research which concerns the origins of feline illness, diagnosis of feline diseases, development of effective treatments, and the identification of disease prevention strategies.

EveryCat’s work worldwide has funded over $11 million in cat health research at more than 30 partner institutions. Grant funding is made possible through the generosity of dedicated donors, collaborators, and sponsors.

The Grant Proposal Submission Portal will open for the Spring 2026 grant proposals on Monday, September 29th, 2025. Grant submission deadline is Friday, January 9th, 2026, 11:59 pm EST. The Spring Grant Awards will be announced in May of 2026.

Grant application format information, grant proposal checklist, RFP guidelines, and additional grant proposal resources can be found on the EveryCat website. Grant proposals must be completed in the grant software utilized by EveryCat. Completed proposals must also be submitted to grants@everycat.org in both PDF and Word file formats – and must include all elements/parts of the application.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Strong Scientific Merit

EveryCat explicitly prioritizes proposals with sound science and methodology. Projects should have clearly defined hypotheses, robust design, and justified methods. Proposals are reviewed for scientific merit as a core criterion.

Success predictor: Clear, rigorous scientific rationale and well-described methodology that aligns with feline health research.

2. Demonstrable Value to Feline Health

A successful proposal shows relevance and potential impact on improving cat health or welfare — not just academic interest. Whether it’s better treatments, diagnostics, or understanding diseases, the link to feline benefit should be evident.

Success predictor: Immediate, plausible relevance to cats’ health outcomes.

3. Clinical Relevance

Studies that can influence clinical practice in veterinary medicine (e.g., treatment strategies, diagnostic tools) are more competitive. The Foundation favours projects that can be applied or translated to real-world veterinary care.

Success predictor: Clear connection to veterinary clinical applications.

4. Proper Budget Justification & Sound Planning

EveryCat reviews the budget carefully — funds must be justified and match requested amounts. Indirect costs, major equipment, and salaries for senior investigators aren’t funded, so applicants must justify each line item and tie budget directly to project needs

Success predictor: A realistic, well-justified budget that stays within guidelines.

5. Humane Treatment of Animals

Because many studies may involve animals, EveryCat has strict humane use guidelines. Projects involving animals must meet Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) standards and justify any procedures involving cats, minimizing discomfort and avoiding euthanasia as an endpoint unless strongly justified by health benefit.

Success predictor: Ethical animal use with humane justification and compliance documentation.

6. Compliance with Application Requirements

The Foundation provides detailed application checklists and templates. Successful proposals typically include all required sections (scientific summary, lay abstract, CVs, timelines, data analysis plans) and follow the specified format. Incomplete submissions risk rejection.

Success predictor: Complete, checklist-aligned applications.

7. Collaboration & Appropriate Expertise

While expertise in feline health is key, interdisciplinary teams and collaborations — especially where skills are complementary — are encouraged. New investigators benefit from working with established feline health researchers.

Success predictor: Investigators with relevant expertise and clear roles in the project.

8. Continuity & Resubmissions

If a project is a continuation of previously funded work or a resubmission, providing progress reports or addressing reviewer feedback can strengthen the proposal. Including a progress update for continuation studies is required.

Success predictor: Thoughtful resubmission addressing prior reviews or clear progress reporting for ongoing work.

🧠 Practical Tips to Improve Success

Here’s how to align your proposal with EveryCat’s expectations:

Make the feline health benefit clear from the outset — both scientifically and in lay terms.

Follow EveryCat’s checklist exactly — missing sections or forms can lead to rejection.

Justify your budget rigorously, keeping it within specified limits and excluding unapproved costs (e.g., PI salary, travel not tied to research).

Involve a statistician where appropriate (especially for clinical or prospective studies).

Demonstrate humane animal use with clear IACUC compliance and justification.

Use past funded projects as models for structure and scope.

• The maximum grant amount is $50,000. Proposals totaling more than $50,000 will not be considered. Continuation of studies funded in previous years will be considered and requests should follow the format as outlined below.

• Projects should have discrete and achievable goals within the $50,000 limit. Projects must demonstrate relevance or benefit to improving domestic feline health and/or be applicable to domestic companion cats.

• Applicants may be researchers in the field of veterinary medicine, faculty veterinarians, postdoctoral fellows, practicing veterinarians or veterinary students. PhDs in other scientific and medical specialties are eligible to apply for EveryCat grants however it is recommended that they collaborate with researchers and clinical scientists in the veterinary medical field.

• The Joan Miller New Feline Investigator Grant Award is also available. For complete award eligibility, see page #4 of this document.
