These grants will be awarded for the following purposes:
The budget can be used for the salary of a research assistant or summer student but not for a master's, doctoral student or postdoctoral fellow. For the latter student categories, an application to the scholarship program must be done. Note also that a research laboratory cannot submit the same project for both a salary award and a research grant.
Indirect (overhead) costs
It is important to note that the Foundation does not have a specific policy regarding overhead or indirect costs. However, it would not be to the advantage of the research applicant to ask for indirect funds. It is generally felt that requesting such funds places a significant burden on the research budget of the Foundation. The higher the overhead expense the less money dedicated to the research which could detract from the project in the view of the members of the Scientific Committee.
The following points are mandatory to submit a valid application:
1. Applicants must submit a single PDF file containing all required documents in the following order:
a. Signature sheet (henceforth, only two (2) signatures will be required, that of the candidate and that of the director of the research center or the director of the university department)
b. Description of the project
c. Canadian Common CV: CIHR academic format
(https://ccv-cvc.ca/indexresearcher.frm)
2. The project description should include the following sections:
a. Background
b. Hypothesis
c. Objective(s)
d. Methods and Analyses
e. Impact
f. Selected References
g. Budget
Font: Times New Roman
Font size: 12
Length: 5,000 characters (spaces not included) + 2 figures (¼ per page each) + 15 references + Budget (maximum 1 page)
3. The deadline for submitting the application to the Savoy Foundation, via email at
(epilepsy@savoy-foundation.ca), is January 31, 2026.

The most important predictor is that the proposed work must clearly address epilepsy or related neurological conditions. Research directly tied to understanding, treating, or improving care for epilepsy is the core mission of the Foundation.
Success tip: Frame the problem in terms of epilepsy mechanisms, patient impact, or clinical outcomes.
The Foundation primarily funds work conducted in Canada and often prioritizes Canadian researchers. Foreign applicants must conduct research in Canadian settings.
Success predictor: Clearly situate your project within the Canadian research environment or demonstrate strong ties to a Canadian host institution.
For research grants, the Foundation states that early-career researchers (within ~10 years of first appointment) will be favoured. This means emerging investigators with promising productivity but without major funding may be competitive.
Success predictor: A compelling case that the award will advance your research program and position you for larger future grants.
Applications (particularly for research grants) must include a concise research description with:
Background and hypothesis
Objectives
Methods and analysis plan
Clear budget rationale
Impact statement relating to epilepsy science.
Success predictor: Projects that demonstrate feasibility within the funding amount and timeline.
The Foundation offers research grants in categories like launching a project, preliminary/pre-research, continuation after interruption, or contribution to specific activities (e.g., symposia). Applications that clearly match the purpose of the funding category perform better.
Success predictor: Explicitly justify why this support is needed — e.g., to generate pilot data, to bridge funding gaps, or to enable initial stages.
The Savoy Foundation’s research grants require specific documentation in a single PDF:
Signed signature sheet,
Project description following prescribed sections,
Canadian Common CV in CIHR format,
Budget, figures, and references.
Success predictor: A complete, correctly ordered, compliant submission.
Although the Foundation does not encourage overhead/indirect costs, proposals that allocate funds directly to research outputs — such as research assistants, equipment, or consumables relevant to epilepsy studies — are favoured.
Success predictor: A tight, well-justified budget that maximizes research dollars.
Grant reviewers look for applications where the proposed research has clear impact on advancing epilepsy knowledge, treatment, or care, even if the project is preliminary or exploratory.
Success predictor: A strong statement of potential scientific, clinical, or patient benefit.
Looking at recent recipients:
Studentships and fellowships are awarded in areas like EEG, cortical dysplasia, psychogenic non-epileptic seizures, and neurophysiology.
Research grants have supported both basic neuroscience and community-based epilepsy care studies.
✔ Emphasize epilepsy relevance across project aims and impact.
✔ Match the funding category you apply to the specific type of support you seek.
✔ Demonstrate feasibility with clear methods and achievable milestones.
✔ Frame your budget to directly support experimental/clinical activities.
✔ For early-career applicants, clearly outline how the award advances your career trajectory.
✔ Follow all formatting and submission requirements rigorously to avoid administrative rejection.
| Predictor | Why It Matters |
