Stipend & Institutional Allowance: Award salary will match applicant’s institutional salary (salaries may be supplemented by the applicant’s institutions), depending on postgraduate year (PGY) level, up to $50,000 per year. Fringe benefits are allowed according to institutional policies, not to exceed 25% of the salary award (up to $12,500 per year). The Foundation will also provide up to $7,500 to be used for non-salary/fringe expenses directly related to the project—including travel to scientific meetings and/or professional membership dues. These funds may not be used to supplement the awardees’ salary/fringe benefits.

The Foundation uses the Proposal Central system for all grants submissions. Just select the Foundation program to which you are applying. All instructions and policies are available at this site. For matters related to submissions for the Research Fellowship Awards please contact N'Dea Johnson. For post-award management questions: postaward@crohnscolitisfoundation.org.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

Strong IBD Focus

Research must directly address Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, aligned with CCF’s “Challenges in IBD Research” strategic roadmap.

Independent & Appropriate Career Stage

Student Fellowships for undergrad/grad/medical students with faculty mentorship .

Postdoctoral Fellowships for early post-PhD/MD researchers showing the need for training .

Career Development Awards target promising mid-stage investigators poised for independence .

Senior Research Awards support established investigators to build pilot data for major funding like NIH

Mentorship & Institutional Support

Fellowships require a formal mentoring plan and student awards require a non-relative faculty mentor

Senior and career awardees must be fully independent and affiliated with eligible institutions (non-profit/public/government) .

Competitive Funding & Budget Compliance

Budgets vary by award:

Student: up to $2.5K

Fellowship: up to $70K/year

Senior: up to $130K/year with direct and capped indirect costs .

Funding cycles typically follow LOI → full proposal stages with strict submission through proposalCENTRAL or Flexigrant .

Strategic Alignment & Innovation Focus

Proposals should address high-impact questions outlined in the foundation’s Challenges in IBD report, such as precision medicine, environmental triggers, novel technologies, and translational or pragmatic clinical research .

Access to Resources & Data

Senior awardees can leverage IBD Plexus biosamples and datasets to boost data quality and justification .

Rigorous Peer Review & Reporting

Applications are reviewed by panels of scientists, clinicians, and people with IBD

Funded grants require annual progress reports and long-term impact tracking (via Researchfish®).

Publications must acknowledge Foundation support and inventions reported.

🚀 Tips to Strengthen Your Application

Align with IBD Challenges report—situate your proposal within CCF priority areas.

Choose the right award—match your career stage and independence level.

Secure mentor & institutional backing early—include commitment letters.

Plan your budget carefully—follow limits and institutional roles.

Utilize CCF resources—like IBD Plexus sample/data for senior-level applicants .

Craft a compelling LOI to earn an invitation to the full proposal.

Prepare for reporting expectations—progress reports, publications, impact data tracking.

Individuals who are already well established in the field of IBD research are not considered eligible for this award. Applicants should identify a senior investigator to serve as a mentor throughout the term of the award. At the time of application, applicants must be employed by an institution (public non-profit, private non-profit, or government) engaged in health care and/or health related research within the United States. Research is not restricted by citizenship; however, proof of legal work status is required.

Applicants must hold an MD and/or PhD (or equivalent degree). Candidates holding MD degrees must have two years of experience after receiving their terminal degree —one year of which must be documented research experience relevant to IBD. Applicants holding PhDs must have at least one year of documented post-doctoral research relevant to IBD.  MD applicants in excess of seven years and PhD applicants in excess of five years of receiving their terminal degree should explain how additional support in the post-doctoral phase would benefit their development beyond their current training.

Proposal Eligibility: Proposals MUST be relevant to IBD (Crohn's Disease or ulcerative colitis) and must include a training and a mentoring plan. Only one application is allowed per applicant per submission date. Simultaneous submission of a Senior Research Award and a Research Training Award is not permitted.
