This programme funds preclinical and clinical research focused on slowing, stopping, or reversing Parkinson’s. We do not fund research which is directed at symptomatic relief. Our grant funding process has changed! Due to the discontinuation of Grant Tracker, we will be returning to manual processes for research grant funding submissions. Please review all the guidance below for information on how to apply. Our funding remit
For preclinical research, we fund grants up to £250,000 (GBP) and prioritise projects that are likely to lead to clinical trials in people with Parkinson’s within 5 years. For clinical research, we fund clinical trials and sub-studies of trials in people with Parkinson’s. The grant amount is flexible but please contact us ahead of submission if you are thinking of applying for a clinical trial.
We fund internationally and accept applications from academics and commercial entities. However, the costs in commercial applications should be justified and equivalent to academic costs where possible.
How to apply for funding
Stage 1 applications should be submitted via email to research@cureparkinsons.org.uk.
All stage 1 application documents can be accessed at the bottom of this page, including:
Additional documents that can be included at this stage but are not mandatory and should be provided in their own format:
Following Research Committee review of stage 1 applications, stage 2 applications will be invited on an individual basis and provided with the necessary documents via email.
The application process
If the proposed project falls within Cure Parkinson’s scope for funding, it will be considered by our independent research committee, which meets on a quarterly basis.
At each meeting, the committee will discuss stage 1 Applications and decide whether they are within remit and should be evaluated further. If they decide that an application should be considered for funding, the applicant will be invited to submit a full application (stage 2) which will subsequently be sent for externally peer review. The feedback from the expert reviews will be discussed at the next quarterly Research Committee meeting, and a recommendation on whether to fund the project will be made for the Cure Parkinson’s trustees to consider. For successful applicants, the process takes approximately three months but can take longer, particularly for clinical trials where an iterative approach may apply.
All successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified by the chair of the Research Committee and/or a suitable Cure Parkinson’s representative.
While Cure Parkinson’s does not publish a detailed numeric scoring rubric, successful projects tend to share these key attributes:
✅ 1. Strong Fit with Cure Parkinson’s Core Mission
Your application must clearly address disease-modifying research — NOT just symptomatic treatment or quality-of-life support without an underlying biological impact.
The goal is projects that slow, stop, or reverse progression and lead toward a cure. Cure Parkinson's
Why this matters: Proposals outside this remit are unlikely to progress beyond initial screening.
✅ 2. Clear Pathway Toward Clinical Translation
For preclinical proposals, reviewers prioritize those with a plausible route into a clinical trial within about five years.
This includes proof-of-concept studies, mechanistic rationale, and evidence the approach could be advanced to human studies. FundsforNGOs
For clinical proposals, clear clinical relevance and appropriate trial design are essential.
✅ 3. Scientific Rigor and Feasibility
Strong proposals clearly outline:
Research questions or hypotheses linked to disease mechanisms
A feasible experimental plan with appropriate methodology
Timeline and milestones that match the funding period and objectives
Clear deliverables tied to measurable outcomes
Rigor and feasibility are key criteria for reviewers and the research committee when advancing applications from Stage 1 to full review. Trialect
✅ 4. Justified Budget & Timeline
Provide a realistic budget breakdown that matches the scope of work (especially for clinical components where costs can escalate) and a timeline that fits the grant period and Cure Parkinson’s expectations (typically 1–3 years). Cure Parkinson's
✅ 5. International & Cross-Sector Eligibility
Cure Parkinson’s accepts applications from around the world and from academic and commercial entities, provided the research fits its mission.
Commercial applicants must complete a commercial entity form and may receive specific scrutiny regarding cost and broader benefit. Trialect
✅ 6. Evidence of Expertise & Capability
Applications that show the research team has:
Relevant prior work/publications
Access to necessary facilities
Strong collaborators or advisory input
are more competitive, especially for larger clinical or translational projects.
✅ 7. Strategic Alignment With iLCT Priorities
If you are targeting research areas prioritized by the International Linked Clinical Trials committee, make sure your application references the iLCT rationale or consult with Cure Parkinson’s research staff for strategic positioning. Cure Parkinson's
✅ 8. Clear Communication and Reviewer-Friendly Narrative
Because Cure Parkinson’s uses:
Internal research committee review
Peer review for full applications
Review clarity and accessibility matter — present a proposal that non-specialist committee members can understand, while satisfying technical reviewers.
Two-stage evaluation
Stage 1 screening form: Short summary of aims, fit, and feasibility.
Full application: For those invited after Stage 1, typically sent for external peer review before committee recommendation.
Timelines are quarterly and decisions usually take ~3 months from submission. Cure Parkinson's
Deadlines are set quarterly, and Cure Parkinson’s encourages early contact with the research team if you’re unsure about fit. Cure Parkinson's
