Our Project Grants support world class research proposals that aim to address vital questions in the field of blood cancer in line with our strategic aims and the priorities of people affected by blood cancer.
Our current strategy focuses on bringing forward the day when no one dies of blood cancer or its treatments. We are looking to maximising our research impact by increasing the amount we spend on research and by targeting that spend in the areas where it will have the most effect.
Grants will typically be awarded for up to three years for a maximum of £300,000.
1. Strong Alignment with Strategic Priorities
Each call specifies priority areas based on the charity’s research strategy:
Prevention, Early detection and predicting outcomes, and Treatment.
Your proposal must address at least one of these areas directly and make clear why it matters for people with blood cancer. Bcuk
Success predictor:
✔ Explicitly tie your research question to one of the stated priority themes.
2. Relevance and Impact Potential
Reviewer criteria include relevance to patients and potential impact in the short or long term. This is assessed both by peer scientists and by people affected by blood cancer. Involving patients in shaping your application (e.g., reviewing the plain English summary) is strongly encouraged. Bcuk
Success predictor:
✔ Demonstrate clear potential benefit — e.g., advancing understanding, enabling better diagnosis, improving treatment outcomes, or reducing side effects.
3. Novelty and Originality
Blood Cancer UK looks for work that addresses gaps in current knowledge rather than duplicating existing research. Proposals should explain what is new and why it has not already been done. Bcuk
Success predictor:
✔ Position your project as novel and necessary within the field.
4. Scientific Rigor and Feasible Approach
Your project must be well-designed and feasible:
Clear hypotheses or research questions
Logical aims and objectives
Strong methodology and appropriate experimental design
Consideration of barriers and mitigation plans
Realistic milestones and timeline
Reviewers evaluate feasibility relative to the time and budget requested. Bcuk
Success predictor:
✔ Provide a clear, detailed plan with justified approaches.
5. Strength and Composition of the Research Team
Assessors consider whether the research team has the expertise required to complete the project. This includes track record, environment and access to necessary facilities. Bcuk
Success predictor:
✔ Ensure your team includes relevant expertise and describe how roles support deliverables.
6. Appropriate Use of Resources & Justified Budget
Reviewers judge whether the budget reflects essential costs and whether the project can be delivered within the time and funds requested. Bcuk
Success predictor:
✔ Justify every cost line and align resources to key activities.
7. Ethics, Regulatory Compliance and Inclusiveness
Applications should demonstrate that ethical and regulatory issues are anticipated and appropriately addressed (e.g., approvals for human samples). Diversity and inclusion in research design are also evaluated. Bcuk
Success predictor:
✔ Include ethical considerations and plans for diversity/fair representation in study design.
8. Patient and Public Involvement (PPI)
Blood Cancer UK explicitly values patient involvement in both shaping and reviewing aspects of research proposals — particularly the lay summary — and recommends ongoing engagement through the project. Bcuk
Success predictor:
✔ Engage people affected by blood cancer early and meaningfully in your application process.
For example, the Project Grants scheme has a ~23 % success rate — demonstrating competitive review across scientific and patient/lay criteria. Blood Cancer UK
Peer review by scientific experts
Review by people affected by blood cancer for relevance and clarity

Applications are usually submitted via the Grant Tracker system. Bcuk
✔ Target a defined strategic theme (prevention, early detection, treatment)
✔ Emphasise impact and relevance to patients
✔ Demonstrate novelty and a clear gap in knowledge
✔ Provide a rigorous, feasible experimental plan
✔ Assemble a strong, well-justified research team
✔ Justify budget and resource allocation precisely
✔ Plan for ethical/regulatory compliance
✔ Include meaningful PPI (Patient/Public Involvement)
Project Grants provide support for clearly defined research projects that aim to address key questions in the field of blood cancers and must address at least one of the three priorities outlined in our new research strategy:
Applicants should clearly outline the potential impact for people affected by blood cancer.
