Before getting started, learn why it is important to understand the structure of Gilead Research Scholars and how we approach grant funding, who is eligible to apply, and what we look for in a research project.

Inclusion Criteria

Hold an MD/MBChB/MBBS, PhD (or equivalent degree) at time of application submission

No more than 10 years have elapsed since the terminal degree

Currently working within an academic research institution or public health organization (e.g. Ministry of Health or within a hospital) and be on track to achieve a research scientific appointment, faculty appointment or other equivalent position

Have a research mentor in country with extensive experience in the field of HIV and/or viral hepatitis or a discipline relevant to implementation science (e.g. economics, engineering, psychology, anthropology etc.)

Be able to devote at least approximately 50% of professional time to research for the next two years (versus administrative, patient care, or teaching responsibilities)

Have a strong interest in public health research focused on HIV and/or viral hepatitis

Be able to complete the research within the 2-year award period, providing evidence (manuscript, presentation, or abstracts) for future research projects

EXCLUSION Criteria

Research investigating Gilead product(s) are not eligible for funding through the Research Scholars Program.

We understand that generic products may naturally arise in the HIV research landscape (e.g. PrEP, TDF, TAF, or other generic drug mentions) in a balanced way when looking at management or prevention research. This is allowed, however, these must be discussed broadly, as proposals should not investigate the safety, efficacy, tolerability, or cost effectiveness of one particular product, or compare products against one another

Interventional clinical studies or trials involving patient administration of any pharmaceutical drugs

Co-principle investigators are not eligible for funding

Duplicative funding: the RSP award cannot overlap with other current or pending funding. It can be used to support a larger research project, as long as it supports a specific component of it

Applicants on visas shorter than the 2-year award period who cannot provide evidence for the duration of the term for the contract
