Description:
The Pravin N. Bhatt Scientific Investigator Award recognizes individuals for their outstanding scientific accomplishments.
Background:
The Pravin N Bhatt Investigator Award was established in 1994 to encourage and recognize an outstanding young scientist who has significantly contributed to laboratory animal science or comparative medicine. This award is named for Dr. Pravin N. Bhatt, who studied infectious diseases of laboratory animals for 25 years and made substantial contributions to our understanding of rat coronaviruses and ectromelia virus (the etiologic agent of mousepox); Dr. Bhatt selflessly mentored undergraduate and graduate students as well as junior scientists. In 2012 all scientific recognitions were concentrated within the Bhatt Award and the restriction to young scientists was abolished. The recipient of the Bhatt Award is invited to present the Wallace P. Rowe Lecture at the AALAS National Meeting.
Award Details:
Plaque and a $4,000 honorarium at the Opening Session of the AALAS National Meeting.
Although AALAS does not publish a detailed public “grant success predictor score” or quantitative predictive model, the GLAS program does use clear eligibility and review criteria that serve as practical indicators of competitiveness:
🔍 1. Relevance to AALAS Mission
Projects need to demonstrably support the enhancement of scientific knowledge in laboratory animal science and welfare. Proposals that strongly address core areas like housing, enrichment, health, or pain/distress typically score better.
🧪 2. Scientific Merit & Hypothesis Validity
Reviewers evaluate:
Clarity and validity of the research hypothesis
Soundness of the study design
Appropriateness of methodology and analysis.
🧑🔬 3. Feasibility
A compelling proposal must clearly show:
Feasibility of completing the project within a one-year timeframe
Investigator experience and capability
Access to required facilities, equipment, and resources.
📍 4. Impact on the Field
Proposals that have potential to:
Advance knowledge significantly
Improve animal welfare or care practices
Influence broader laboratory animal science practice
are generally stronger contenders.
🤝 5. Collaboration Encouraged
AALAS encourages collaboration with broader scientific communities, which may strengthen a proposal’s relevance and impact even if there’s no formal numerical scoring rubric.
These are short-term (typically 1-year) funding awards aimed at advancing LAS research, not long-term multi-year research project grants.
AALAS sponsors other professional awards and recognitions at its National Meeting, but these are separate from the GLAS research program.
AALAS GLAS is AALAS’s primary research grant program supporting laboratory animal science projects up to $50,000 (Standard) or $7,500 (Small).
Grant success is determined by peer and committee review focusing on relevance, scientific merit, feasibility, and impact, even though no explicit predictive formula is published.
Eligibility requires AALAS membership for the principal investigator, and applications are typically due in early February each year.
Nominees demonstrate significant effort engaged in scientific research.
