AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Alignment with Novartis strategic areas of interest ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is the most important predictor.

Competitive proposals should directly fit:

  • Novartis therapeutic areas
  • The specific funding opportunity
  • Current scientific priorities
  • Identified medical needs
  • Relevant drug-development opportunities

Novartis explicitly states that unsolicited research proposals are considered when they align with its strategic areas of interest and can enhance patient care or the development of innovative therapies.

2. Significant unmet medical need ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Strong applications clearly explain the clinical problem and why existing approaches are insufficient.

Examples include:

  • Limited treatment options
  • Poor treatment response
  • Disease progression
  • Diagnostic gaps
  • Safety or tolerability problems
  • Treatment resistance
  • Unmet patient needs

The strongest proposals connect the research directly to an important healthcare problem.

3. Strong scientific merit and meaningful objectives ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Novartis states that proposed investigator-initiated research must have meaningful scientific objectives and a valid study design.

Competitive proposals demonstrate:

  • Clear hypothesis
  • Important research question
  • Strong scientific rationale
  • Appropriate methodology
  • Relevant endpoints
  • Potential to generate useful medical knowledge

4. Potential to improve patient care ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Strong projects should demonstrate how the findings could:

  • Improve treatment decisions
  • Improve patient outcomes
  • Improve understanding of disease
  • Optimize use of therapies
  • Identify appropriate patient populations
  • Address treatment gaps

Novartis specifically describes external research as a way to complement its own research and better understand the benefit/risk profile of therapies and opportunities to address unmet medical needs.

5. High-quality study design and methodology ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Competitive IIT/IIR proposals should include:

  • Clearly defined objectives
  • Appropriate study population
  • Scientifically justified endpoints
  • Appropriate controls/comparators
  • Valid statistical methodology
  • Realistic timelines
  • Appropriate safety monitoring

Novartis emphasizes the requirement for a valid study design and protection of patient and animal safety and welfare.

6. Investigator expertise and ability to conduct the study ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Novartis evaluates the qualifications of the proposed investigator and research team.

Important factors include:

  • Relevant scientific expertise
  • Clinical research experience
  • Previous publications
  • Experience in the therapeutic area
  • Ability to conduct clinical trials
  • Appropriate sub-investigators
  • Institutional resources

For certain Novartis programs, the company explicitly evaluates the PI's therapeutic-area expertise, clinical-trial experience, and available resources.

7. Translational and clinical relevance ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The strongest research proposals establish a pathway from scientific findings to patient benefit.

Competitive projects may address:

  • Biomarkers
  • Precision medicine
  • Treatment response
  • New therapeutic strategies
  • Clinical outcomes
  • Real-world evidence
  • Safety and tolerability
  • Disease mechanisms relevant to therapy

This is particularly valuable when the research can help advance innovative therapies to more patients.

8. Independence and scientific credibility ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

For investigator-initiated research, Novartis expects the external investigator to retain scientific responsibility.

A strong proposal clearly establishes:

  • Independent scientific concept
  • Investigator-led study design
  • Independent analysis
  • Publication plans
  • Appropriate regulatory responsibility
  • Transparent collaboration with Novartis where applicable

Novartis defines IITs as studies developed and sponsored by an independent investigator or academic sponsor.

9. Clear objectives, milestones, deliverables, and outcomes ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

For general external funding requests, Novartis requires applications to describe:

  • Clearly defined purpose
  • Objectives
  • Deliverables
  • Milestones
  • Expected outcomes

This makes a proposal easier to evaluate and demonstrates that the requested funding will produce measurable results.

10. Regulatory compliance, ethics, and appropriate budget ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Competitive proposals must demonstrate:

  • IRB/ethics compliance where applicable
  • Patient safety
  • Data/privacy protections
  • Appropriate regulatory approvals
  • Realistic budget
  • Appropriate use of requested resources
  • Compliance with local laws and regulations

Novartis emphasizes that external funding must comply with applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards.

Patient education grants can be requested to support a variety of different activities including disease awareness, live events, web-based education, print/media, newsletters, websites, seminars, etc. We will only accept grant requests for patient education programs
