Established in 1991 and sponsored by Kenvue Inc, the Norton M. Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions in clinical investigations that have advanced the diagnosis, treatment, and/or prevention of craniofacial-oral-dental diseases, as well as outstanding research endeavors in other areas.
Background
The Norton M. Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research was established to recognize investigators whose clinical research has had a meaningful impact on some aspect of clinical dentistry. Thirty distinguished recipients have received the award since its inception in 1991.
This award honors the memory of Dr. Norton M. Ross (1925-1990), a dentist and pharmacologist who spent most of his career in academic and research positions. Dr. Ross elevated clinical research to a higher level of scientific standards. His considerable contributions to the fields of oral medicine and dental clinical research have had a positive and lasting influence on the public’s oral health.
This award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions in clinical investigations that have advanced the diagnosis, treatment and/or prevention of craniofacial-oral-dental diseases, as well as outstanding research endeavors in other areas.
1. Eligibility & Need Focus
ADAF's core Charitable Assistance Grants are strictly needs-based, for dentists (or their dependents/spouses) facing financial hardship due to accidental injury, medical conditions, advanced age or disability
Importantly, applicants must demonstrate depletion of personal assets and incomes (savings, retirement, insurance) before receiving support .
💰 2. Comprehensive Financial Documentation
Applications require detailed financials:
Monthly household income vs. expenses.
Full asset & liability disclosure (Appendices A/B).
Supporting documentation: tax returns, account statements, benefits records
Incomplete or inconsistent financials are automatic disqualifiers
✔️ 3. Must Demonstrate Exhaustion of All Other Options
Before ADAF funding, applicants are required to have applied for all other available federal, state, or local aid and document these efforts
🕒 4. Appropriate Funding Scope & Duration
Grants are for essential living & emergency needs—not debt repayment, staff payroll, or business expenses .
Standard awards span up to 12 months, with possible renewal upon justification of continued need
👥 5. Peer Review & ADA Community Norms
A volunteer committee of dental peers reviews applications monthly .
Aligning with ADA’s ethical and professional values strengthens applications.
🏆 6. Awards for Leadership & Research
Beyond assistance grants, ADAF also supports excellence via:
Dr. David Whiston Leadership Award – recognizes commitment to leadership, access, service; prioritizes early career dentists fostering equity & community outreach.
Crest & Oral‑B Promising Researcher Award – awards $5,000 to early-stage investigators in oral-health research; eligibility spans DDS, PhD, MPH, etc. .
Predictors for these awards:
Demonstrated research potential, publications, or preliminary data.
Leadership record and community impact (especially access initiatives).
Clear presentation of how award funds will be used (e.g., conference attendance).
📊 Table – Summary of Key Predictors
| Grant Type | Key Predictors |
|---|---|
| Charitable Assistance | Confirmed financial hardship, complete asset/liability disclosure, documentation of all prior aid efforts, coherent monthly need breakdown |
| Leadership/Research Awards | Evidenced leadership or research work, alignment with ADAF mission (access, innovation), well-defined use of funds |
✅ Pro Tips for Applicants
Be thorough in financial disclosure – complete all appendices; attach documentation.
Show full resource depletions – IRS forms, insurance statements, even personal loans.
State your need clearly – explain the triggering event, date, and financial consequence.
Support future sustainability – detail any recovery plan, income efforts, or ongoing support.
For awards, emphasize innovation, leadership, and mission alignment, along with specific fund usage plans.
Selection is based upon the scope of the nominee’s research, with special emphasis on its impact on clinical dentistry and on publications in refereed journals.
Award recipients typically demonstrate a high level of creativity and innovation. For example, individuals who have not only developed new materials but also conducted the clinical trials necessary to translate the research results to clinical application are more probable candidates than those involved solely in clinical testing of dental materials or other products. They may have generated new insights into disease etiology and/or pathogenesis, which, in turn, have led to changes in therapeutic and/or preventive measures for a given disease.
