Purpose
This award provides funding support for experienced researchers with recognized productivity — either within or outside the eczema field — to conduct highly innovative, cutting-edge investigations related to eczema. Data from this award can then be used to seek additional, larger-scale funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or other funding entities to build on these discoveries.
Champion Grants facilitate trail-blazing research by established investigators who have built a life-long career in eczema research, as well as thought leaders from other areas of study that can bring additional new perspectives to the research forefront.
This award also serves as a bridge for previous successful NEA research award recipients by providing a funding mechanism to stay in the eczema research field and strengthen their research program and commitment to advancing our understanding of this serious disease.
Proposals should address at least one of the following research priorities:
🧬 1. Direct Focus on Eczema Pathogenesis or Treatment
NEA grants prioritize research that:
Investigates underlying biological mechanisms of eczema (e.g., skin barrier function, immune dysregulation)
Explores new or improved treatments (topicals, biologics, microbiome therapies)
Studies disease progression, comorbidities, or flare triggers
Predictor: A proposal that clearly aligns with the etiology, treatment, or quality of life impacts of eczema.
💡 2. Innovative or Translational Potential
NEA values novel, high-impact ideas — especially those with realistic potential to improve patient outcomes.
Strong areas include:
Skin microbiome research
Personalized medicine in eczema
Biomarker discovery
JAK inhibitors, biologic therapies
Itch mechanisms and relief strategies
Predictor: Early-stage but clinically relevant innovations with a translational path.
🧑🔬 3. Early-Career Investigator Focus
NEA actively supports young investigators, postdocs, and junior faculty to build careers in eczema research.
Predictors of success:
Strong mentorship
Institutional support
Preliminary data or clear research training goals
Demonstrated interest in eczema (prior studies, abstracts, or advocacy involvement)
📊 4. Scientific Rigor and Feasibility
Clear research question and testable hypothesis
Well-defined study aims, methods, and statistical plans
Reasonable timelines and budget justification
Predictor: Projects with well-structured methods and clear deliverables suited to the grant’s duration and budget.
🤝 5. Patient-Centered Relevance
NEA values projects that reflect patient experiences, address health disparities, or promote shared decision-making.
Including patient input or advisory boards strengthens proposals.
Predictor: Direct benefit to the eczema community (especially underserved or pediatric populations).
📋 NEA Grant Programs
| Program | Purpose | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Eczema Champion Research Grants | Supports senior and early-stage researchers with high-impact ideas | $100K–$200K |
| Eczema Research Fellowships | Supports postdocs or residents in eczema-focused labs | ~$50K |
| Community Impact Grants | Supports QOL, education, access, or advocacy projects | ~$25K–$50K |
| Catalyst Research Grants | Small pilot studies or new directions | $10K–$50K |
✅ Strong Proposal Examples:
Skin barrier repair mechanisms in pediatric eczema
Neuroimmune pathways in chronic itch
JAK-STAT inhibitors in steroid-refractory AD
Racial disparities in eczema diagnosis and treatment
Environmental triggers and exposome studies
Associate professors and above that have or have had national-level funding as a principal investigator (or Co-PI) within the past five years on an R01 grant or its equivalent (e.g. VA Merit Award, NSF grant, NIH program project or cooperative grant).
Previous recipients of NEA research grants are also eligible to apply provided the following criteria are met:
The principal investigator must be personally and actively responsible for the conduct of the proposed research and eligible to apply for research grants under the guidelines of the applicant’s host institution. The principal investigator does not need to be a United States citizen, and the research does not need to take place in the United States.
