Mentored Research Training Grants (MRTG) help anesthesiologists develop the skills, preliminary data for subsequent grant applications, and research publications needed to become independent investigators.
NOTE: Beginning with the Fall 2025 Grant Cycle, applications for which open June 1, 2025, FAER is introducing changes to the MRTG in the form of an 18-month pilot program. Changes entail an increase in funding from $250,000 to $300,000 and a reduction in the minimum required protected time from 75% to 60%. For more information, view the full announcement here.
Research Areas: All areas of research that contribute to advances in patient care and can lead to sustained extramural research will be considered, including basic science, clinical, translational, health services, and education research
🩺 1. Academic Career Commitment in Anesthesiology
Applicants must demonstrate a long-term goal of becoming physician-scientists or academic anesthesiologists.
Typically MDs, MD/PhDs, or DOs with residency or faculty positions in anesthesiology departments.
Strong career development statements and mentorship plans.
📚 2. Relevant and Promising Research Proposals
Research focused on areas such as:
Mechanisms of anesthesia
Perioperative medicine
Pain management
Neuroscience, pharmacology, critical care, or patient safety
Projects that align with NIH fundable pathways are favored.
Emphasis on pilot data and scientific rigor.
🧪 3. Early-Career Stage with Institutional Support
FAER primarily supports:
Residents and junior faculty (within 5 years of initial faculty appointment).
Physician-scientists who are beginning independent research.
Strong mentor-mentee structure and institutional commitment are crucial.
Protected research time (typically 75% for K-type grants).
🏫 4. Affiliation with ACGME-Accredited U.S. Institutions
Applicants must be at academic departments of anesthesiology at ACGME-accredited institutions in the U.S.
Institutions with existing research infrastructure and NIH funding history increase competitiveness.
🧑🔬 5. Prior Scholarly Work and Engagement
Publications in anesthesiology, pain, or perioperative journals.
Abstract presentations at ASA or IARS annual meetings.
Involvement in FAER-related events or the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA).
