Medical Student Research Award

American Neuromuscular Foundation

The AANEM Medical Student Research Award encourages medical students to conduct research in neuromuscular and electrodiagnostic medicine. The award is given to medical students who are the first author and designated presenter on abstracts presented at the AANEM Annual Meeting.

Award and Eligibility Criteria

Original research must be conducted in the fields of neuromuscular diseases, physical medicine and rehabilitation, or electrodiagnostic medicine.

To be eligible for this award, the recipient must be the first author of the research, designated abstract presenter, present at the AANEM Annual Meeting, and a Medical Student Member at time of abstract submission. (AANEM Medical Student Membership is complimentary. Please contact membership@aanem.org to request a membership application.)

Applicants will only receive one Medical Student Research Award per year if more than one abstract is submitted.

Submission Guidelines

Submit an abstract between January 1 and March 15. Eligibility is automatically determined during the submission process based on the applicant’s membership status and type. No further action is needed from the applicant.

By April 1, a letter of recommendation must sent from your project director to AANEM (meeting@aanem.org). This letter of recommendation should be written by the person overseeing the work presented on the poster and indicate the extent of your participation in the project.

Award Benefits

Medical Student Research Award recipients receive:

  • $500
  • Recognition in the annual meeting abstract guide and at the AANEM Annual Meeting
  • Abstract published in an issue of Muscle & Nerve
  • Free AANEM Annual Meeting registration

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Relevance to Neuromuscular Disease

Proposals must focus directly on muscle & nerve disorders covered by the AANEM’s scope (e.g., muscular dystrophies, inflammatory myopathies, peripheral neuropathies). Clear linkage to disease mechanisms, outcomes or therapeutic development strengthens competitiveness. ANF

2. Innovation & High-Impact Potential

Especially for Research Grants, reviewers value high-risk, high-reward projects that either break new ground or extend existing discoveries into novel areas with potential to accelerate scientific progress. ANF

3. Feasible and Well-Structured Research Plan

Competitive applications include a clear hypothesis or research objective, robust methodology, defined milestones and measurable outcomes fitting within the funding duration and budget. Articulate why and how the study will succeed. Reviewers expect realistic timelines and measurable deliverables.

4. Investigator Qualifications & Institutional Support

Track record of the PI (and team, if applicable), sufficient training, and institutional access to necessary facilities are important. For Development Grants, early-career investigators with solid training trajectories are attractive; for mid-career grants, independence and experience matter. ANF

5. Clear Budget Justification

Budgets should logically reflect project needs and comply with allowable expenses. Although modest in size, justify salary support, supplies and travel (e.g., to present at meetings) relative to expected scientific output. ANF

6. Effective Communication & Proposal Narrative

Proposals that clearly describe background, significance, aims, methods, impact and future directions are more likely to score well. Good writing helps reviewers assess merit quickly and confidently.

🛠 Practical Tips for Applicants

Prepare early: Draft LOIs well before the January deadline.
Align with ANF priorities: Tailor your narrative to neuromuscular disease relevance.
Build collaboration where appropriate: Even independent projects can benefit from multi-disciplinary input.
Address innovation: Explain why your project is novel and worth funding.
Use feedback: Seek peer feedback on drafts; clear, concise writing helps reviewers.
Include letters of support: Document institutional backing and mentor/expert endorsements where applicable.
