Louise Oriole Burevitch Endowment

North Carolina Community Foundation

The Louise Oriole Burevitch Endowment was founded by the noted Wilmington philanthropist, whose gifts are having a transformative effect on eastern North Carolina.

The North Carolina Community Foundation will accept applications for grants from the Louise Oriole Burevitch Endowment from July 3, 2026, to NOON Eastern on Aug. 4, 2026.

NCCF expects to accept applications from charitable organizations with programs, projects and general operations that serve eastern NC and focus on one of the following areas:

  • Education
  • Health
  • Human Services

Focus areas

Education benefits students, teachers, school personnel within pre-K, K-12 and 4-year college and university education systems with a goal of escalating school success.

  • After-school educational programs and other educational extra-curricular activities serving students may be considered with a focus on academic achievement.
  • The Endowment may consider non-academic educational opportunities for youth that offer leadership development.

Health includes programs and services that yield positive impacts on the health and well-being of individuals, groups, and communities.

  • Health includes physical health, mental health, and general wellness.
  • The priority of the program and/or service must be to improve health outcomes directly, not indirectly.

Human Services addresses basic human needs – food, clothing, shelter and safety.

  • Job skills training and employment assistance may be considered within this category as they serve basic human needs and improve quality of life.
  • Because of the fund’s preference for benefiting women, domestic violence services are included within this category as serving a basic human need for safety.

Terms

  • Grants typically will range from $25,000 to $50,000 and will not exceed $50,000.
  • Organizations may only submit one proposal per cycle.
  • Organizations that already receive grants from this fund are welcome to apply if they meet the stated criteria; however, organizations cannot receive more than $50,000 total in any given year.
  • Any grant received through this process must be completed, and follow-up report submitted, prior to submitting another application for this program.
  • The grant term is 24 months from the time of the award (October or early November). Funds must be spent, and proposed work completed within the 24-month time frame.
  • Grantees are eligible to receive an award every three years. For example, if an organization received an award in 2025, it will be eligible again in 2028.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Clear Benefit to North Carolina Communities (Strongest Predictor)

NCCF's mission is centered on improving the quality of life throughout North Carolina. Successful applications clearly demonstrate how the proposed project will benefit residents, organizations, or communities within the state.

2. Alignment with Local Community Needs

Because many NCCF grants are administered through local affiliate foundations, proposals that address documented community priorities tend to be more competitive.

Strong applications typically include:

  • Community needs assessments
  • Local demographic data
  • Evidence of unmet needs
  • Input from community stakeholders

Projects responding directly to local challenges often receive favorable consideration.

3. Measurable Community Impact

Successful proposals clearly describe:

  • Expected outcomes
  • Number of people served
  • Community-level benefits
  • Evaluation methods

NCCF funds are intended to create tangible improvements in communities, making measurable impact a major review factor.

4. Service to Underserved Populations

Many NCCF-affiliated funds prioritize projects serving:

  • Low-income populations
  • Women and families
  • Rural communities
  • Youth
  • Older adults
  • Historically underserved groups

For example, NCCF's Women's Fund has specifically supported initiatives addressing housing security for women.

5. Strong Organizational Capacity

Reviewers often assess whether the applicant organization has:

  • Effective leadership
  • Financial stability
  • Programmatic experience
  • Successful past performance
  • Strong governance

Organizations with demonstrated ability to deliver results generally have an advantage.

6. Feasible Project Design

Competitive applications typically include:

  • Realistic timelines
  • Clear implementation plans
  • Achievable objectives
  • Appropriate staffing
  • Well-justified budgets

Projects should be appropriately scaled to the requested funding amount.

7. Alignment with NCCF Funding Areas

NCCF community grantmaking supports a broad range of local priorities, including:

  • Human services
  • Education
  • Youth development
  • Health
  • Food and nutrition
  • Arts and culture
  • Community development

Applications fitting these established areas are generally more competitive.

8. Community Partnerships

Strong proposals frequently demonstrate collaboration with:

  • Schools
  • Healthcare providers
  • Local governments
  • Faith-based organizations
  • Community nonprofits

Partnerships increase community reach and strengthen project credibility.

9. Sustainability

Reviewers often favor projects that can continue producing benefits after NCCF funding ends.

Examples include:

  • Capacity-building initiatives
  • Long-term community programs
  • Sustainable service models
  • Leveraged funding opportunities

10. Geographic Fit

Many NCCF grants are administered through county or regional affiliate foundations. Projects serving the specific geographic area associated with the funding source tend to align most closely with donor intent and community priorities.

Frequently Funded Themes

NCCF-supported projects commonly involve:

  • Education and literacy
  • Youth development
  • Health and wellness
  • Food security
  • Human services
  • Housing stability
  • Community development

  • Arts and cultural programs
  • Rural community support

  3. Measurable outcomes and evaluation metrics.
  4. Service to underserved populations when applicable.
  5. A realistic budget and implementation plan.
  6. Demonstrated organizational capacity.
  7. Potential for sustainable community impact beyond the grant period.

Key Insight

Compared with national research foundations, NCCF places much greater emphasis on local community impact, responsiveness to regional needs, and practical benefits for North Carolina residents. Projects that clearly improve the well-being of a specific community and demonstrate measurable outcomes tend to have the strongest funding prospects.

Applicants must be nonprofit organizations that are qualified as tax-exempt public charities under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

  • Nonprofit organizations operating as a 501(c)(3) public charity via a pre-existing relationship with a fiscal sponsor may also apply. The application must include a letter from the sponsoring organization that verifies the relationship, describes the nature of the relationship and includes when the relationship was established.
  • Proposals must benefit communities in eastern NC. The eligibility area includes 41 eastern NC counties: Beaufort, Bertie, Bladen, Brunswick, Camden, Carteret, Chowan, Columbus, Craven, Cumberland, Currituck, Dare, Duplin, Edgecombe, Gates, Greene, Halifax, Harnett, Hertford, Hoke, Hyde, Johnston, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Nash, New Hanover, Northampton, Onslow, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Pender, Perquimans, Pitt, Robeson, Sampson, Scotland, Tyrrell, Washington, Wayne and Wilson.

  • Organizations must offer programs/services without discrimination on the basis of age, race, national origin, ethnicity, gender, physical ability, sexual orientation, political affiliation or religious belief.
