Funding level: Maximum of $75,000 may be requested
Period: Up to 1 year of support is available
Description: Pilot awards are intended to test new hypotheses or technologies that have the potential to significantly advance our understanding and/or treatment of CCLA, GLA, GSD, or KLA. Preliminary data are required.
Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, genetic analysis, biomarker identification, preclinical model development and characterization, imaging, and single-cell RNA sequencing of animal or patient samples.
How to apply: Submit a letter of intent (LOI) to the LMI. If your LOI is selected, you will be invited to submit a full grant application.
LOIs are due by March 20, 2026. LOIs should be submitted to grants@lmiresearch.org by 11:59 PM CST.
Invitations for full application will be sent by March 25, 2026. Full applications are due May 29, 2026.
Because LMI funding is competitive and mission-specific, successful proposals usually demonstrate the following:
✔ 1. Direct Relevance to Lymphatic Anomalies
Projects should clearly address the biology, pathogenesis, diagnostics, or potential therapeutic strategies for complex lymphatic anomalies (GLA, GSD, KLA, CCLA). Proposals with only tangential lymphatic relevance may be deprioritised. scientifyRESEARCH
✔ 2. Early-Career Development (for Young Investigator Awards)
For awards like the Alfie Milne Young Investigator Award:
Projects should be feasible within a 1-year timeframe
The applicant should demonstrate a strong commitment to lymphatic research
Support from a scientific mentor or host lab with appropriate expertise is essential ResearchConnect
✔ 3. Scientific Quality & Clarity
Proposals should:
Have specific, achievable aims
Include clear rationale and background evidence relevant to CLAs
Describe appropriate methods and anticipated outcomes
Provide a compelling case for how the work could lead to further discoveries or external funding scientifyRESEARCH
✔ 4. Feasibility & Budget Justification
Given the modest size of most LMI awards:
Aims must be tightly scoped
Budgets should be justified relative to deliverables
Methods should fit within a one-year timeline (for pilot/young investigator awards) VASCERN
✔ 5. Broader Impact on the Field
Even for pilot studies, reviewers consider:
Potential for data to stimulate larger proposals
Benefit to the broader CLA research community
Relevance to patient care or clinical understanding scientifyRESEARCH
✔ Start with a strong LOI: LOIs are used to screen for concept merit before full proposal invitations. Trialect
✔ Engage a supportive mentor or lab team: Particularly critical for young investigator awards. ResearchConnect
✔ Be realistic with scope: Given the limited award size, focus on a single aim with clear milestones. VASCERN
✔ Link to future funding: Explain how the results will unlock larger, externally funded studies. scientifyRESEARCH
✔ Review mission alignment: Emphasise how your work advances understanding of lymphatic anomalies. scientifyRESEARCH
| Funding Type | Target | Focus | Typical Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alfie Milne Young Investigator Award | Early career researchers | Pilot research on CLAs | ~$25,000 (1 yr) ResearchConnect |
| Pilot & Established Investigator Awards | Mid/established investigators | Exploratory studies of lymphatic anomalies | Up to ~$75,000 (1 yr) VASCERN |
🔍 When LMI Funding Is a Good Fit
✔ Your research focuses on complex lymphatic anomalies (e.g., GLA, GSD, KLA, CCLA)
✔ You need seed funding for pilot data or exploratory work
✔ You are an early-career investigator building a lymphatic research portfolio
✔ You can clearly explain how your work advances understanding or treatment of CLAs
Assistant professor or higher. International applicants can apply.
