The KRESCENT program New Investigator Award is awarded to researchers (within three years of their first faculty appointment) who have clearly demonstrated excellence during their pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training in kidney disease. This award provides salary support for up to three years of the faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or equivalent at a Canadian University. The purpose of this award is to support the recipient in becoming established as a fully independent investigator in the field of kidney disease.
Applications for this award must be supported by the university or institution where the candidate will conduct the proposed research. The university or institution is expected to guarantee the applicant appropriate academic rank and to provide adequate space and facilities for the investigator’s research, commensurate with the status of the awardee in terms of experience and level of support by the program. The institution or department will also have to confirm protected research time as stated in the guidelines.
The annual stipend is $ 70,000 CAD (MD) or $65,000 CAD (PhD) for three years. 50% of this stipend will be covered by the KRESCENT program, and 50% will be matched by the host institution.
The program also offers to match up to $25,000 of infrastructure support (lab start-up costs and staff) committed by the host institution.
The Kidney Foundation of Canada does not publish a single formal “success predictor score” like some large government agencies, but its funding programs use rigorous peer review and clear criteria that influence competitiveness:
🧠 1. Scientific Excellence & Relevance
Proposals must demonstrate high scientific merit, relevance to kidney health/disease, and a clear potential impact on patient outcomes.
Research addressing gaps in knowledge or advancing new approaches in kidney disease or transplantation is viewed favorably.
📍 2. Alignment With Mission
Projects must align with the foundation’s strategic goals to improve kidney health, treatment, and quality of life for those living with kidney disease.
👩🔬 3. Applicant Qualifications
Independent researchers (for general research grants) or allied health professionals (for allied research grants) must show a strong track record and capacity to complete the proposed work.
Emerging investigators supported through KRESCENT must demonstrate potential for leadership and research excellence.
🧪 4. Peer Review
Funding decisions are made through peer review by scientific and clinical experts, often volunteers or review panels drawn from the health/community research sectors.
Reviewers assess proposals against criteria such as novelty, feasibility, design quality, and potential impact.
🗓 5. Compliance With Application Requirements
Submissions must abide by eligibility rules, deadlines, structured online systems (e.g., ProposalCentral), and LOI/full application stages where required.
The Kidney Foundation of Canada is a leading Canadian funder of kidney-related research, offering competitive grants for investigators and allied health professionals across biomedical to population health research.

Peer review evaluations
Adherence to eligibility and application rules
