ESCMID Research Grants help nurture the next generation of researchers in CM and ID, by providing an important start in their research funding journey. These grants offer a unique opportunity to explore bacterial infections & diseases or fungal/viral/parasitic infections & diseases in alternating years.
Funding and payment
ESCMID’s research grants offer up to 20K EUR per project. The grant can be used for the entirety or specific aspects of your project. Upon the signing of the grant agreement, 50% of the allocated funds are issued to the grantee’s institution, with the remaining 50% released upon the submission and approval of the final reports (refer to reporting below for more details). ESCMID also reserves up to 50K EUR each for two exceptional projects. Recognised by esteemed reviewers for their outstanding potential, selected projects have the possibility to receive this additional funding to drive their topics further.
ESCMID Förderverein Grants for Research in AMR and Emerging Infections
As part of the ESCMID strategy, the ESCMID Förderverein grant enhances funding for research projects focusing on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) or Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID). This support benefits both individual researchers and SGs. As part of this initiative, four additional grants are awarded annually. To qualify, projects must address the challenges posed by AMR and/or EID, aligning with the specified theme for the year. Applications are integrated into the standard grant calls, with clear indications provided in the application form.
1. ESCMID Young Investigator Award
A springboard for emerging scientists:
Notable Recipient: Norbert Pardi, the Hungarian biochemist pivotal in mRNA vaccine development (notably for COVID-19), received the Young Investigator Award in 2020. This award clearly underscores its role in recognizing future innovators.
Another early trailblazer: Mihai Netea, renowned for contributions in innate immunity, received the ESCMID Young Investigator Award back in 2005—a testament to the long-standing legacy of this award in fostering scientific excellence.
2. ESCMID Excellence Award
Celebrates established leaders with significant contributions:
Ilaria Capua, an authority in virology and science communication, received ESCMID’s Excellence Award in 2014, highlighting her impactful work in outbreak reporting and advocacy.
Similarly, Dimitrios Kontoyiannis, a respected expert in fungal pathogenesis and clinical microbiology, was honored with the ESCMID Award of Excellence in 2018—further illustrating the award’s prestige in recognizing high-impact contributors.
Early Recognition: The Young Investigator Award helps spotlight emerging talent at critical career junctures, often preceding significant scientific breakthroughs or leadership roles.
Sustained Influence: The Excellence Award typically acknowledges mid- to late-career professionals whose work has shaped clinical microbiology or infectious diseases—making it both a recognition of past achievements and a predictor of continued leadership.

Additional Insights
ESCMID also runs various research grants—such as Individual Research Grants, Study Group Research Grants, and the Study Group Collaboration Grant—which foster collaborative, peer-recognized projects across Europe. While detailed past recipient lists aren't publicly accessible, their role in facilitating high-quality, cross-national research is noteworthy.
Qualify for a research grant opportunity by meeting the following criteria:
Applicants who have received any ESCMID Research Grant (Individual, Study Group or SG Collaboration) may only apply for a subsequent grant in the year after official completion of the first project. Additionally, you cannot be awarded more than one ESCMID Research Grant (Individual, Study Group or SG Collaboration) in a single year or be listed as principal investigator in more than one concurrent project. Please be aware that members of the ESCMID Executive Committee (EC) are not eligible to apply for research grants or provide support letters for applications.
