Ignacio H. de Larramendi Research Grants

Fundación Mapfre Canarias

Through the Ignacio H. de Larramendi Research Grants Fundación Mapfre promotes projects carried out by individual researchers or research teams, within the academic and professional spheres, who carry out their work independently or within the framework of a university, hospital, company or research center to which they are affiliated, and whose object of study is related to health promotion or insurance and social protection.

We support research through this initiative because  we firmly believe that furthering knowledge is the key to improving the quality of life of the people who make up our society.

The research projects related to health promotion have a maximum gross endowment of 30,000 euros per grant, and must explore one of the following topics:

  • Strategies and education to change habits: prevention of obesity, and the promotion of physical activity and emotional well-being (including the appropriate use of new technologies).
  • Emergency response training for the general population.
  • Assessment of bodily harm: assessment of the consequences of an event (traumatic or accidental, medical negligence, aggression or disease) on the health of the individual and its repercussions on the essential activities of ordinary life and other specific activities of personal development (pain and suffering, loss of quality of life).
  • Health management: clinical quality and safety.
  • Longevity and how lifestyle influences this.

The endowment for projects related to insurance and social protection will be a maximum gross amount of 15,000 euros, for studies aimed at exploring the following topics:

  • Insurance.
  • Risk management: emerging risks.
  • New technologies in the insurance field.
  • Social protection: pensions, savings, investment, asset liquidation and the Silver Economy (longevity economics).

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Direct relevance to improving health in the Canary Islands (highest predictor)

This is the strongest success predictor.

Competitive proposals should address medical problems that can improve:

  • Patient health
  • Clinical care
  • Disease prevention
  • Health outcomes
  • Quality of life

with particular relevance to the Canary Islands population.

Projects that clearly benefit the regional healthcare system align most closely with the Foundation's mission.

2. Applicant affiliation with eligible Canary Islands University Hospitals (essential eligibility factor)

The current Medical Research Scholarships are intended for physicians working within the Servicio Canario de Salud at one of the designated university hospitals:

  • Complejo Hospitalario Universitario Insular Materno Infantil
  • Hospital Universitario de Canarias
  • Hospital Universitario de Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín
  • Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria

Meeting this institutional eligibility is essential before scientific merit is considered.

3. Strong clinical relevance and patient impact (very high predictor)

The Foundation supports research that has practical value for patient care.

Competitive projects should demonstrate potential to:

  • Improve diagnosis
  • Improve treatment
  • Enhance patient safety
  • Improve disease management
  • Reduce morbidity
  • Improve healthcare delivery

Projects with a clear path from research to clinical benefit are particularly well aligned.

4. Scientific quality and methodological rigor (very high predictor)

Strong applications typically include:

  • A clearly defined research question
  • Sound scientific rationale
  • Appropriate study design
  • Robust methodology
  • Statistical analysis plan
  • Realistic timeline

Even though these are regional scholarships, scientific excellence remains a central selection criterion.

5. Innovation and originality (high predictor)

Competitive proposals often include:

  • Novel clinical approaches
  • Innovative diagnostics
  • New therapeutic strategies
  • Improved healthcare practices
  • Emerging medical technologies

The Foundation seeks studies that contribute meaningful new knowledge rather than incremental improvements.

6. Feasibility within the scholarship period (high predictor)

Projects should demonstrate:

  • Realistic objectives
  • Available patient population
  • Appropriate institutional resources
  • Achievable milestones
  • Efficient project management

A focused and achievable study is generally more competitive than an overly ambitious proposal.

7. Investigator capability and institutional support (high predictor)

Competitive applicants usually demonstrate:

  • Clinical expertise
  • Previous research experience
  • Appropriate mentorship (where relevant)
  • Access to hospital infrastructure
  • Institutional support for the project

A capable research team increases confidence that the study will be completed successfully.

8. Contribution to regional medical knowledge (high and distinctive predictor)

A distinguishing feature of Fundación MAPFRE Canarias is its emphasis on strengthening healthcare within the Canary Islands.

Projects are strengthened when they:

  • Address regional health priorities
  • Generate evidence applicable to local practice
  • Improve regional clinical protocols
  • Benefit the Canary Islands healthcare system

Research with direct regional applicability is especially well aligned with the Foundation's objectives.

9. Potential for dissemination and implementation (high predictor)

Competitive projects should have a credible plan to:

  • Publish findings
  • Present results
  • Inform clinical practice
  • Support evidence-based medicine
  • Improve healthcare services

The Foundation aims to support research that leads to tangible improvements in medical practice.

10. Long-term contribution to medical research and professional development (high predictor)

Beyond the immediate project, strong applications demonstrate potential to:

  • Build future research capacity
  • Develop clinician-researchers
  • Generate future collaborations
  • Support continued innovation within the Canary Islands health system

This aligns with the Foundation's long-standing commitment to supporting excellence in medical research.

We support research through this initiative because  we firmly believe that furthering knowledge is the key to improving the quality of life of the people who make up our society.
