ifk Research Fellowship

International Research Center for Cultural Studies (IFK)

ifk Research Fellowships are designed to support post-doctoral scholars early in their careers. Applicants must have a Doctorate or a Ph.D. at the beginning of the fellowship. Qualified scholars are eligible without regard to nationality, institutional, or departmental affiliation; although preference is given to qualified Austrian applicants.

ifk Senior Fellowships are designed to support excellent scholars, who are well advanced in their academic careers (full professors or clearly established in their field). Qualified scholars are eligible without regard to nationality, institutional, or departmental affiliation; although preference is given to applicants of international repute who have published significant papers in recognized refereed journals and books that establish the author as a leading expert in his/her academic field.

Duration and Funding ifk Senior and Research Fellowships will be granted for one academic semester (1 October–31 January next year or 1 March–30 June). Fellowships entail a maximum monthly stipend of € 2.387 (€ 77 per day), office space at the ifk equipped with electronic facilities including internet access as well as one-time travel costs to and from Vienna and a rent allowance. It is necessary, in order to receive the scholarship, to maintain a regular presence at the ifk. Costs for health and social insurance are not covered by the ifk.

General Criteria of Evaluation A thematic link to the ifk’s current research foci of »The Last Things Before the Last«, »Situated in the Global«, or »Different Work« is desired but not required for an application. For more details visit: ifk.ac.at/research-focus. html

The ifk will also accept independent projects within the realm of humanities and social sciences unrelated to the present research focus. Applications will be peer-reviewed by the ifk‘s International Advisory Board. A final decision will be taken in regard to the requirements of the yearly scholarly program.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Strong interdisciplinary cultural-studies project (highest predictor)

This is the single biggest predictor.

IFK states that successful proposals must be an interdisciplinary undertaking in the humanities, social sciences, or the arts with a clear focus on the study of culture(s), cultural theory, or cultural analysis.

Strong topics often include:

  • cultural studies theory
  • media and visual culture
  • migration and transnational cultures
  • translation studies
  • memory studies
  • labor/work and culture
  • political theory with cultural analysis
  • art research or humanities-based interdisciplinary work

Projects may relate to IFK’s annual themes (such as Cultures of Translation, Different Work, or Situated in the Global), but this is welcomed rather than mandatory.

2. Originality and intellectual quality of the research proposal (very high predictor)

The research proposal itself is heavily weighted.

Successful applications usually present:

  • a clear and original research question
  • strong conceptual framing
  • rigorous methodology
  • well-positioned scholarly intervention
  • clear contribution to existing literature
  • strong theoretical sophistication combined with analytical clarity

For Research Fellowships, IFK requests a concise proposal (around 1,200 words); Junior Fellowships allow up to 2,000 words.

3. Fit with IFK’s intellectual community / justification for being at IFK

This is unusually important compared with many fellowships.

IFK asks applicants to explain why the project should specifically be carried out at IFK.

Strong applications usually make a convincing case around:

  • why Vienna/IFK is the right scholarly setting
  • relevance to IFK’s research culture
  • how the applicant will contribute to seminars, workshops, and discussion
  • expected benefit from interdisciplinary exchange with other fellows

Projects that could “fit anywhere” are often weaker than projects clearly tailored to IFK.

4. Strong academic track record appropriate to career stage

For Research Fellowships:

  • PhD/postdoctoral record
  • publications
  • conference activity
  • scholarly visibility

For Junior Fellowships:

  • strong dissertation progress
  • excellent academic preparation
  • promising early scholarly trajectory

IFK Research Fellowships are open to postdoctoral scholars of all nationalities; Junior Fellowships are more specific to Austrian or Austria-based doctoral researchers.

5. Ability to contribute to interdisciplinary dialogue

This is a defining IFK predictor.

IFK emphasizes:

  • clarity
  • communication
  • interdisciplinary exchange

Strong applicants can communicate across disciplines and write in a way that is legible beyond a narrow specialty.

Projects that combine theory with empirical or artistic material often fit especially well.

6. Feasibility within the fellowship period

Successful proposals usually show a realistic plan for what can be achieved during:

  • 1 academic semester (Research/Senior Fellowship), or
  • 1 academic year (Junior Fellowship)

Reviewers tend to favor clearly scoped projects with achievable outputs:

  • dissertation chapter(s)
  • journal article
  • book chapter
  • archival or theoretical research milestone

Qualified scholars are eligible without regard to nationality, institutional, or departmental affiliation; although preference is given to applicants of international repute who have published significant papers in recognized refereed journals and books that establish the author as a leading expert in his/her academic field.
