IBSA Foundation Research Equity Prize

As part of the IBSA Foundation Fellowships, a €5,000 award will be given to the best scientific project developed in a laboratory, research institute or university based in a developing country.

This special award aims to promote equity in access to research, recognising emerging scientific excellence in resource-limited contexts and strengthening international dialogue within the scientific community.

The list of eligible countries is available on the United Nations website: Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia excluding Israel, Japan and the Republic of Korea, and Oceania excluding Australia and New Zealand.

Application Procedure

  2. List of best peer-reviewed scientific publications (min 1 - max 3)
  3. Cover letter of a short self-presentation

Applicants are promptly informed as soon as a decision is reached, normally within three months from the deadline. The award is assigned only after presentation of the acceptance letter by the Host Institution, which should be sent to the IBSA Foundation within one week of the communication.

The Awards Ceremony will be held in during spring 2027.
The exact date, venue and modality will be confirmed when the results are announced.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. High-quality scientific project (Highest Predictor ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

This is the primary evaluation criterion.

The Scientific Board explicitly assesses the quality of the proposed project based on:

  • Scientific value
  • Originality
  • Feasibility

Competitive proposals should present:

  • A significant scientific question
  • Strong rationale
  • Clear objectives
  • Potential to advance biomedical knowledge

2. Originality and innovation (Highest Predictor ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

Innovation is a major component of project evaluation.

Competitive projects should demonstrate:

  • Novel hypotheses
  • Innovative methodologies
  • Creative scientific approaches
  • Potential to advance the field beyond current knowledge

Projects that introduce genuinely new concepts or technologies are particularly competitive.

3. Strong feasibility of the research plan (Highest Predictor ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

The Foundation explicitly evaluates feasibility.

Competitive applications include:

  • Realistic objectives
  • Appropriate methodology
  • Practical timeline
  • Achievable milestones
  • Availability of necessary resources

Even highly innovative projects must demonstrate that they can realistically be completed within the fellowship period.

4. Candidate's research experience and scientific CV (Highest Predictor ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

The applicant's curriculum vitae is a formal evaluation criterion.

Reviewers consider:

  • Previous research experience
  • Scientific publications
  • Academic achievements
  • Technical expertise
  • Research independence and potential

Applicants should demonstrate a strong trajectory for future scientific leadership.

5. Appropriate host laboratory and research environment (Very High Predictor ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

The suitability of the host institution is explicitly reviewed.

Competitive host laboratories provide:

  • Expertise in the proposed research area
  • Advanced facilities
  • Appropriate mentorship
  • Strong scientific environment
  • Resources needed to complete the project

A well-matched host institution increases confidence in successful project completion.

6. Mobility and international research experience (Very High Predictor ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

A distinctive feature of the IBSA Foundation is its encouragement of scientific mobility.

Applicants who:

  • Conduct research in a laboratory different from their institution of origin
  • Gain international research experience
  • Expand their scientific network

receive a note of merit from the Scientific Board.

7. Alignment with eligible biomedical research areas (Very High Predictor ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

Competitive proposals should align with one of the Foundation's supported fields, including:

  • Dermatology
  • Endocrinology
  • Fertility and Urology
  • Orthopaedics and Pain Medicine
  • Healthy Ageing

Projects closely aligned with these themes are more competitive.

8. Early-career investigator potential (High Predictor ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆)

The fellowship is specifically designed for young researchers.

Eligible applicants include:

  • PhD students
  • PhD graduates
  • Postdoctoral researchers
  • Medical residents

Applicants must generally be under 40 years of age and actively engaged in biomedical research at a qualifying host institution.

9. Strong publication record and academic productivity (High Predictor ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆)

Applicants are required to submit their best peer-reviewed publications.

Competitive candidates typically demonstrate:

  • High-quality publications
  • Scientific productivity
  • Contributions to their research field
  • Evidence of research excellence

While early-career applicants are expected, a solid publication record strengthens competitiveness.

10. Potential to advance an independent research career (High Predictor ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆)

The Foundation aims to support researchers who will become future scientific leaders.

Competitive proposals should demonstrate that the fellowship will:

  • Advance scientific independence
  • Expand research expertise
  • Build international collaborations
  • Generate future funding opportunities
  • Strengthen long-term academic careers

Applicants of any nationality must be under 40 years old on the deadline for the submission of proposals.

They must have a degree in medicine, biology, pharmacy, biotechnology or bioengineering. Open to PhD students, PhD, Post-Doc and residents. Permanent positions such as Professors cannot apply.

For the entire duration of the grant, applicants must be active in the Host Institution, i.e. a research organization (such as universities, hospitals or other research centres), irrespective of its legal status (organized under public or private law), whose primary goal is to independently conduct non-economic biomedical research and to disseminate its results.
