ASCLS does not publish a formal statistical “success predictor model” like NIH or NSF — meaning there is no official probability formula or scoring rubric available publicly. However, the application criteria and expectations effectively outline what reviewers evaluate, which serve as practical predictors of competitiveness:
✔ Membership & Eligibility Compliance
Applicants must be current ASCLS members and meet professional/citizenship requirements to be considered.
✔ Relevance to Clinical Laboratory Science
Proposals must address issues relevant to laboratory science practice, education, or clinical outcomes in the field.
✔ Scientific Merit & Feasibility
Reviewers look for:
Clear research question or hypothesis
Sound design and methodology
Feasibility of completing the project with the requested funds
Institutional support (e.g., supervisory letter and IRB approval when applicable).
✔ Plan for Dissemination or Impact
Proposals often include plans to present results at the ASCLS Annual Meeting or publish in the Clinical Laboratory Science journal, which strengthens the competitiveness of an application.
✔ Track Record & Execution Capability
Even though E&R Fund awards are relatively small, demonstrated ability to carry out the project (past research, institutional resources) is an implicit factor reviewers consider.
ASCLS funds smaller clinical laboratory science research projects through the Member Research Grant and graduate student research grants via its Education & Research Fund.
Awards are typically up to $5,000 for member-conducted projects.
No formal, published grant success predictor score exists, but competitive proposals generally share:
Strong alignment with laboratory science practice
Clear research design and feasibility
Compliance with eligibility rules
Plans for dissemination of results.
Student member or professional member of ASCLS.
