The Heineken Young Scientists Awards are intended to give the next generation of talented researchers extra encouragement. They are presented simultaneously with the international Heineken Prizes to promising young researchers whose outstanding work sets an example for other young scientists and scholars. The Awards are funded by the Alfred Heineken Fondsen Foundation.
The Heineken Young Scientists Awards include a monetary award of 15,000 euros.
Based on the public material (jury reports, laudations, descriptions of young scientist winners), here are what appear to be strong predictors of success:
| Predictor | Evidence / What It Looks Like |
|---|---|
| Distinguished scientific contribution / track record | For senior awards, laureates often have produced landmark or groundbreaking work. For example, proteomics pioneers (Aebersold, Mann) were recently awarded for pioneering techniques. |
| Recent activity & relevance | Not just past glory; recent important work that’s active. For Young Scientists, the recent years post-PhD matter. For example, work that contributes to current societal challenges (see Lorena De Vita’s work on reconciliation) is praised. |
| Originality / Innovation | The research tends to be original, sometimes opening new directions or using novel methods, rather than incremental. For example, Young Scientists are recognized for unique approaches. |
| Impact / Societal relevance | The jury often remarks on how the work addresses broader issues or connects to societal, cultural or environmental challenges. E.g. work that contributes not just academically but to public debate or societal understanding. |
| Clear affiliation & visibility | Being in a reputable institute; being known in one’s field; having outputs (papers, recognition) that are visible internationally. Senior nominees tend to be well-established researchers. Young nominees need to show promise with early career outputs. |
| Appropriate scope for “Young scientists” | Meeting criteria such as PhD completion date, being employed in NL, etc. Candidates who are too senior or outside those windows are likely disqualified or not competitive. |
| Peer nomination / support | Because nominations are submitted by peers, departments, etc., having strong endorsements seems important. While jury decisions are independent, being nominated by people who understand one’s work and can make the case helps. |
