Guts UK/Falk Foundation 2026 Nurse Recognition Prize Application Form
The Falk Foundation and Guts UK invite applications from gastroenterology (including hepatology and pancreatology) nurses working in primary or secondary care for a £1,000 prize in recognition of an innovation that has led to an improvement in patient care.
Applications should be completed through the form below. A PDF version of your application will be sent to your email address after you submit the form (check your spam/junk folder if you have not received it and ensure you use an email account that will allow the delivery of the PDF attachment). Please print this off, obtain all relevant signatures required and email a scanned signed full application to research@gutscharity.org.uk by Monday 2 February 2026, 5pm.
The application will only be considered complete once we receive the signed version. Applications received after this time will not be considered.
Please do not exceed the word limits set in the application form and ensure all rich text formatted sections use 11 size font.
Guts UK encourages projects aligned with current priority themes, such as:
Upper GI conditions (e.g., GORD, Barrett’s oesophagus)
Diverticular disease
Pancreatitis
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Childhood gut, liver and pancreatic diseases
Gut microbiome and nutrition
Gastrointestinal and hepatopancreatic cancers Guts UK
✔ Projects that explicitly frame their aims within these priority areas score higher in relevance.
Applications must demonstrate:
A well-justified hypothesis or research question
Clear methodological planning that is plausible and feasible within the project’s timeframe and budget
Scientific importance and originality Guts UK
Predictor: A logically coherent, evidence-based plan with realistic objectives.
Guts UK focuses on digestive conditions with potential to improve patient lives.
Reviewers look for:
How findings might translate into improved diagnosis, treatment, prevention, or understanding of disease
The clinical significance of outcomes
Potential to inform care pathways or health service improvement Guts UK
Especially for awards beyond initial career stages:
Evidence of relevant expertise or training in the field
Track record suggests capability to deliver the project
For trainees or ECRs, letters of support from supervisors/mentors demonstrating commitment to the project’s success Guts UK
Because Guts UK awards are modest relative to many national grants:
Budgets must show good cost effectiveness
Funds should be clearly tied to activities that will produce significant outputs or enable larger future grants Guts UK
Many Guts UK grant schemes (e.g., Development Grants) are designed to act as stepping stones. Reviewers assess whether the project:
Will generate pilot data for larger schemes (NIHR, UKRI, charity partnerships)
Naturally leads to future applications
Strengthens the applicant’s trajectory toward independent research Guts UK
Projects must outline:
Clear timelines
Required approvals (e.g., ethics, clinical)
Practical arrangements for data collection and analysis
Early indication of readiness for approvals enhances credibility.
📍 Development Grants
Proof of concept and translational ideas are central.
Show pathway to larger funding explicitly.
Address potentially high clinical impact relative to cost.
👩⚕️ Trainee Awards
Focus on projects with clinical need or service improvement (including audits/QI).
Network awards should demonstrate collaboration strength and spread across trusts.
Supervisor support must be clearly articulated. Guts UK
| Success Predictor | What It Signals |
|---|---|
| Alignment to Guts UK priorities | Relevance and mission fit Guts UK |
| Scientific excellence & rigour | Foundation of merit Guts UK |
| Clinical impact potential | Patient benefit focus Guts UK |
| Strong research team | Capability to deliver Guts UK |
| Value for money | Efficient use of limited funds Guts UK |
| Clear follow-up/future funding trajectory | Career & impact growth Guts UK |
Because Guts UK awards are often small, targeted, and strategic, proposals that bridge strong science with clear clinical context, patient relevance and future momentum tend to outperform those that are either too broad or insufficiently grounded in digestive disease priorities.
