Grants from the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation are distributed in four focus areas (human needs, environmental stewardship, education, community vitality) and are limited to organizations defined as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code.
Grant applications will be accepted online during two annual grant cycles, one in the spring and one in the fall.
Most grant awards range from $1,000 to $15,000, while higher amounts may be awarded when a program is an exceptional fit. We often receive funding requests far in excess of our Foundation budget. Regrettably we must often decline support for otherwise worthy proposals. Such a response does not reflect on Dominion Energy's view of the value of the organization or its services.
The Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation will accept grant requests during two grant cycles each year.
| Grant Cycle Opens | Application Deadline | Expected Decision Notification |
|---|---|---|
| January 13, 2025 | February 24, 2025 | May |
| August 4, 2025 | September 15, 2025 | November |
We will host virtual office hours during each grant cycle to answer questions from non-profit organizations about the grant process, timeline, applications and the Benevity platform.

Note to organizations in Ohio, Utah, and North Carolina:
Enbridge completed the acquisitions of Dominion Energy Ohio, Dominion Energy Utah/Wyoming/Idaho and Dominion Energy North Carolina gas in 2024, and today these utilities are operating as Enbridge Gas Ohio, Enbridge Gas Utah/Wyoming/Idaho and Enbridge Gas North Carolina.
Due to this transition, the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation is no longer making grants in these areas. We continue to make grants in northeastern North Carolina where Dominion Energy is still the electric service provider.
Enbridge is committed to maintaining a significant presence in the communities it serves. For more information about Enbridge’s giving focus areas, eligibility guidelines and how to apply for funding, visit Enbridge Gas.
1. Geographic and Legal Eligibility
Your nonprofit must hold valid 501(c)(3) status in the U.S.
Eligible service areas include Virginia, South Carolina, northeastern North Carolina, West Virginia (Grant & Tucker Counties), Connecticut, and parts of Rhode Island (Kent & Washington counties) where Dominion Energy operates
Note: Grants are no longer available in Ohio, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, or North Carolina gas areas after Dominion sold them to Enbridge in 2024
2. Alignment with Foundation Focus Areas
Dominion Energy funds proposals in four priority domains:
Basic Human Needs (food security, shelter, health access)
Environmental Stewardship (conservation, energy efficiency)
Education (especially STEM and workforce readiness)
Community Vitality (neighborhood revitalization, cultural programs, equity initiatives)
Grants must deliver tangible, local outcomes rather than unrestricted operating support
3. Appropriate Scale & Use of Funds
Typical awards range from US $1,000 to $15,000, though larger grants may be awarded for exceptionally aligned projects.
The Foundation generally does not fund capital campaigns, research, university endowments, scholarships, or religious/advocacy organizations
4. Application Timelines & Process
The Foundation operates two annual grant cycles:
Spring cycle: opens Jan 13, closes Feb 24 — decisions in May
Fall cycle: opens Aug 4, closes Sept 15 — decisions in November .
New in 2025: Applicants must have a completed Benevity cause profile with a valid self-certification before applying
5. Proposal Design & Organizational Fit
Successful applications typically:
Propose clear, focused projects with measurable outputs (e.g. number of people served, restored habitat acres)
Emphasize local impact that benefits communities within Dominion’s utility service area (e.g., senior nutrition, conservation efforts, STEM programming, neighborhood revitalization)
Include cost-sharing or volunteer engagement, showing efficiency and strong community investment.
6. Review Process & Evaluation
Virtual office hours are provided during each grant cycle to assist applicant nonprofits via the Benevity platform
The Foundation receives many more requests than it can fully support; even well-aligned proposals may not be funded due to limited budgets (~$46M invested in 2023–24)
| Success Predictor | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Located in Dominion service area | Ensures geographic eligibility |
| 501(c)(3) nonprofit | Required legal status |
| Project-based focus in priority area | Aligns with Foundation’s funding mission |
| Budget aligned to typical award size | Demonstrates realistic scope |
| Benevity profile completed | Required before submission in 2025 |
| Clear outputs and community impact | Makes proposals competitive in peer evaluation |
| Timely submission each cycle | Missing deadlines disqualifies application |
📌 Recommended Next Steps
Confirm location: Ensure your organization operates within Dominion’s service states/counties.
Prepare a Benevity profile, including self-certification, before the next grant cycle opens.
Craft a focused, measurable project plan aligned to one of the four Foundation focus areas.
Maintain active participation in virtual office hours offered during grant cycles.
Apply early, since submission windows, staff assistance, and awareness of eligibility criteria all matter.
The primary interest of our foundation is to support programs and specific projects. Consequently, support of capital campaigns is limited and provided on an exceptional basis. We do not typically fund university research projects or endow chairs.
