Giving Circle for the Advancement of Women (GCAW) Award

Society of Interventional Radiology

Provide career development opportunities for women in interventional radiology. GCAW is dedicated to engaging all generations of women in interventional radiology through the power of community philanthropy.

How to apply

Applicants will submit their award applications online through our dedicated portal. The application process includes providing:

Personal, professional and academic information
A personal statement outlining their leadership goals
A course description and summary of total costs of the course
Letters of recommendation

All applications will be reviewed by the selection committee.

Review process

SIR Foundation staff review eligibility of applicants.

Founding Circle members score blinded applications and present them to all GCAW Circle members. GCAW members will vote on one or more opportunities to fund for the cycle.

GCAW awardees will be informed on September 1, 2026.

After completion of the program, recipient(s) will share with GCAW their experience either in person at the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting or at a virtual meeting.

1. Direct relevance to interventional radiology and patient care (highest predictor)

This is the strongest predictor across SIR Foundation mechanisms.

Competitive projects should clearly advance:

Image-guided therapies
Minimally invasive interventions
Interventional oncology
Vascular interventions
Embolization therapies
Venous and arterial disease
Interventional pain management
Women's health interventions
IR devices and technologies
Image-guided treatment planning and outcomes

The Pilot and trainee grants explicitly support work in areas important to the advancement of interventional radiology and patient care.

2. Strong scientific significance and potential clinical impact (very high predictor)

The strongest applications address a meaningful clinical problem and explain how the findings could improve IR practice or patient outcomes.

Competitive projects often aim to:

SIR Foundation's targeted requests for proposals explicitly welcome innovative ideas in high-priority areas.

Competitive proposals generally demonstrate:

Realistic recruitment plans
Sound statistical analysis
Achievable milestones
Appropriate budget and timeline

Feasibility is particularly important because several mechanisms are relatively focused pilot or one-year awards. Applications must also comply fully with program guidelines; incomplete or noncompliant submissions are ineligible.

5. Potential to generate preliminary data for larger external funding (very high predictor)

This is one of the clearest success predictors for the Pilot Research Grant and Dr. Ernest J. Ring Academic Development Grant.

The Pilot Research Grant is specifically intended to generate preliminary data that can strengthen future applications to peer-reviewed funding agencies. The Ring Grant is designed to help junior faculty progress toward additional funding, including major federal support.

Strong proposals therefore explain how the project could lead to:

NIH funding
Larger foundation grants
Multicenter studies
Clinical trials

6. Strong investigator potential and career trajectory

This is a particularly important practical predictor for the current grant cycle.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet four criteria to be eligible to apply for the GCAW award. These criteria are in place for the 2025–2026 calendar years and open to change based on GCAW Founding Circle and Legacy Circle discussion and the availability for the SIR Foundation staff to implement.

Applicants must be citizens of the United States or Canada or those who have permanent resident status therein.
- Permanent residents must submit documentation of their status.
- An exception can be made if an applicant is at an institution in the U.S. or Canada and is on a visa. A letter will be required from the department chair guaranteeing completion of the project.
Active SIR member
MD, DO, PhD or PhD equivalent

SIR members currently serving in a leadership position in the SIR or SIR Foundation** are not eligible to apply for or receive new grant/research funding or award from the SIR Foundation during the term of their tenure.

** defined as: Board of Directors; members of the Steering Council or Clinical Specialty Council; and chair/vice chair of an SIR/SIR Foundation committee, division or section.
